Ok, got the newsletter this morning and it sounds interesting.

Plus Size Pattern Fitting & Design

Quote:
To start, we'll discuss the proportions and design lines that work best for plus sizes, and how to use fabric colors, patterns, and textures as design elements. You'll learn to take accurate measurements, understand wearing and design ease, and select the best pattern size. I'll show you how to make an easy, inexpensive paper tape dress form that accurately reproduces your unique dimensions, figure variations, and posture, so fitting yourself will be fast and fearless. Using a stylish and simple Vogue peplum top pattern to learn the process, you'll use your unique set of measurements to adjust the standardized pattern in length and width, or to upsize it if you are beyond the size range available. You'll also learn to adjust for large cup sizes and for figure variations common to plus sizes. Then I'll show you how to do a fast basted fitting the way a custom dressmaker does it, by learning to read and correct any unwanted lines that form when the fit isn't quite right. Finally, we'll look at some exciting design variations made from the basic pattern for some extra plus-size pizzazz! Sign up for Plus-Size Pattern Fitting & Design, and sew stylish clothes that fit any body every time.

The author's book sounds interesting too:

Quote:
Barbara Deckert, author of Sewing for Plus Sizes and Sewing 911: Practical and Creative Rescues for Sewing Emergencies, draws on years of custom dressmaking and her own experience as a large woman. She teaches this class with honesty, warmth and humor.

The cool part is that you will get Vogue 8815, the peplum top pattern.

However, they say it is for Intermediates.

I signed up for the class and started watching it last night. It is very good. Lots and lots of information. Barbara talks about shap, proportion, fabrics and then shows how to make a paper tape dress form.
Next is adjusting the pattern to fit your body. This is where the class gets down to busniness. She explains how to select the best size pattern for your measurements. She shows you how to take measurements. How to adjust the tissue based on your measurements. She does an excelent job of explaining dart rotation. Then show you how to make various pattern adjustments.
This is as far as I got last night. I will come back and update this post after I watch more of the glass.

I'd love to read your update soon. I just signed up for sale classest this week, but this plus size class had not been offered yet.

Hi Ada. I am in the class also and started watching. Do you know if the pattern is included with the class?

Yes the pattern comes with the class.

I finished watching it last night. Barbara has some garments that she created using the Vogue pattern. One is a black jacket with slotted seams (red tartan peeking thur the seam) that I am going to make for sure once I get the top to fit.
She moved the opening around to the front and put in a heavy duty metal zipper.

One of the things I like about this class is how she shows her mistakes and talks about her process of thinking thru the problem and comes up with a solution.

Her favorite saying is "it isn't rocket science just sewing". Kind of puts things into perspective for me. I have been trying to make everything perfect and when it doesn't turn out "perfect" I become dissatisfied with the garment and set it aside creating another UFO.

I know what you mean about perfect. I made a top that I thought was terrible, so hung it in my closet and forgot about it. You guessed it, I pulled it out a couple of months later and actually looked for a label because I did not remember buying it and liked it. Duh

I also signed up for the class. I have watched most of the classes and I'm really enjoying the class. I also want to make the black jacket with the slot seams that she shows in the video. The material she gives is very helpful for Plus Size Sewing.

The way Barbara finds the bust point was new to me but makes a lot of sense.

I'm almost through watching the classes, and I can't wait for my pattern to arrive so I can begin! I found her fitting and alteration tips very helpful (I'm just barely in the intermediate category, phew!) and I am just itching to make the jacket with the slotted seams, although I think I'll add a snap on hood..... Barbara is a great teacher, responds to questions quickly, and just brilliant to listen to.

I'm wondering about this class, what size pattern do you get? I need a 10 for neckline and shoulder but have a 38 c bust , 37 waist and 41 hips. only 5'2" with short arms and legs, do I fit in a plus size class?
