kimono sleeves how are they supposed to fit?

How do you know how far up in the armpit it's supposed to go? Also is it the nature of the beast that when you live your arms up the entire shirt comes up?

For practical purposes, though, the armhole seam should be as close to your armpit as it can be without either distorting the design or making it impossible to get the garment on or off. What you just mentioned is the reason. A deep armhole (like a low crotch in pants) restricts movement, because the whole garment has to ride up to accommodate all but tiny movements.
