Viking Emerald 116 as carry on luggage

She's flying in from Minnesota and I'd like it to be a surprise. I'm afraid for it thru checked luggage. How difficult would it be to take it back as carry on luggage? She's flying Southwest non-stop, so she would not have to lug it thru an airport during a plane change. Hopefully her boyfriend will be able to meet her at the airport, and if not, she'll have a shuttle to take her to her door.

But personally, I'd consider shipping it (in its original box) to her ala UPS... So she has the original box. If she's gonna fly with the box, then maybe a small foldy-uppy wheeled cart would be a good idea? Or get her a wheeled nice case, too... (Tutto?) to take it as carry on. But then you lose the original box (unless you check the box as luggage or ship that to her residence). ------ nightowlsally.com On my radar someday: Babylock Serger, and some machine for travel. If the machine is in its box then it will be too big for carryon. Even if you could hoist the bare machine up into the overhead, I would seriously worry about the machine getting damaged in flight. I agree with the other posters & ship it FedEx Ground or UPS.

The Topaz is larger tha the Emerald. No trouble with security, either. I had mine in a rolling case and taped the accessories compartment so it would not open. One caution would be that she should be strong enough to put the machine up and get it down. You don't want to hurt anyone while trying to stow it. ------ http://asgchicago.wordpress.com

I wouldn't want to fly with a new sewing machine--it could be a hassle. And if she picks one up in her area, she may be able to take classes if she needs to.
