Good afternoon,

I need to make a lap quilt that a person can lay over their legs at an outdoor football game. I have been reading, here on line and there is no "set" size.

What size would you recommend if you were sitting in the bleachers, freezing your bum off?? I was thinking 36" X 36".

I am planning on making the quilt out of fleece squares in the school colors. I am open to any and all advice.

Thank you for answering my question.

I suggest something a little larger, maybe more like crib quilt size... 42x56 or something I think is the size of my daughters crib quilt I made... which I've also used as a lap quilt (in the manner you describe) from time to time

I agree with Amina, when you're freezing, there's no such thing as too much quilt.

Being from northern Illinois, can I suggest a layer like denim, twill, or even rip-stop nylon to cut the wind? Either as a backing or sandwiched inside... It might also add weight to keep the cover on in the wind.

Do you want it to drape over you or do you want to sit on it as well? If sitting on it, you need a lot bigger size. Say a twin size.

Baby size is 36 x 54
Afghan size is 54 x 72
Twin size is 54 x 90
Double size is 72 x 90

So, is it just you or is there someoene else who would want to snuggle up in this quilt?

What about rain? A quilt will get wet---unless you spray it with a protective coating and let it dry. Cottons and so forth will absorb moisture and you do not want that. You would have to spray it good on both the front and the back side or use a fabric that repells rain and moisture.
