Which needle for flannel?

My flannel is very nice quality, thick and double-napped and I'm having a bit of trouble with choosing the right needle (at least that's what I think the problem is). The fabric is mooshing under the foot, sticking a bit and wants to get stuffed into the needle hole. I am using my single needle plate, reduced top tension, and 57D 1/4" foot. I started out with a 12 topstitch needle, then changed to an 11 universal just trying to find a good fit. I have switched to sharps for most sewing except knits. I wonder if that would work better than a universal. I buy Schemtz on sale at JA's or Hancocks. I bet a 12 or 14 would work. I know you need the 1/4" for quilting but I wonder if a walking foot would work better to keep it moving along. I would maybe use a bit longer stitch length too. HTH

Date: 11/4/12 7:52 PM Thankyou, I hadn't thought to use the walking foot or a microtex needle. I'll definitely try that. This fabric is SO nice that I don't want to mess it up. Like the one you use on leather/pleather. It's truly beautiful fabric, SO soft and thick and fluffy. I'm really impressed with the quality. Edited to add: I set up my machine first thing this morning with the walking foot, 20D foot, and 80/12 microtex needle. Voila! Perfection!
