Pattern calls for blind stitch on the first fold on right side of mans shirt prior to second fold and press. Is there any reason a machine basting stitch could not be used and removed when final top stitching is ready.

Go for what works for you! Pattern makers are sometimes very arbitrary in their instructions!

I have done that as well... basting stitch should work fine.
