My stepdaughter wants a new sewing machine for her bridal shower, and her future mother in law wants to buy her one. Not too expensive, with basic features only. Please, offer your suggestions!

How about a gift certificate? Then she can add some to that if she wants to and can get the machine she wants. Same advice we usually give to DHs and SOs who post here asking this question - how can one possibly know what to answer? I would want to choose my own.

I'm more than passing fond of my Janome DC4030, but then again, I think it's out of production.

As a first resort, I second Muffet on the gift certificate. However, if that is not possible, or the preference is to buy the machine, I wound give the Janome HD3000 a good look over. Very basic, mechanical, and solid. I'm told that it does well with a variety of thicknesses, making it a good all around starter machine.

We bought a Babylock Elizabeth for our daughter-in-law last year. It was less than $900. I took her to the shop and told the dealer our price range. She demonstrated several machines to her and and let her sew on them for herself. The Elizabeth has a scissors button and several decorative stitches. It's a good solid machine, intuitive to use... and the one she chose. Our dealer sells Bernina, Babylock and Viking. The Babylock is the one she bonded with. Jeanie

I would go with the best dealership do she can get continued support as she moves along in her seeing adventures. I have owned other brands but paired down all but my Baby Locks. The dealer support, warranty, tech knowledge, classroom offerings and machine quality are there for me. Even moving across states, I have felt that they care about me as a customer.
I think it might be a fun day if she were able to set up appointments to visit the various dealers after the stress of the wedding and try out different models within a set price range. That initial bonding experience will lead her to the best one.

Maybe a special day have lunch and go machine shopping. Make a fun day out of it and a special bonding memory. Then she can pick out the one she wants.

A Featherweight.

Seriously.

You won't find a better machine with a better stitch for a beginner at that price anywhere.

I totally agree with the gift certificate. My step-daughter-in-law was given a machine and hasn't taken it out of the box - 6 years later!
