Sewing with sweater knits: Pockets
How would you stabilize the knit fabric?

I have a very nice ribbed sweater knit and I'd love to copy this Crumpet sweater dress. Any advice on how to stabilize the fabric for pocket placement? I'm thinking I should line the pockets but what about reinforcing the dress to avoid sagging around the pockets? Simple interfacing the back of the fashion fabric around the pocket area? Of course, the pocket would be decorative and not functional. TIA

I would use woven tape on the inside of the pocket where you turn the edges under. You could even add some inside the dress where the corners attach.

Thank you Sharon. That's a good suggestion.

I would use fusible tricot on the dress and pocket parts, and also stitch bias tape at the openings to reinforce the pockets. Bias tape has a little give and take; a straight grain tape such as seam tape, might make it too stiff.

One more vote for fusible tricot.

clear elastic is good, also. It's used extensively in shoulder seams for knits and even necklines.
