I also liked the Embroidery and Specialty Threads section that is linked there, too. I use cheap cheap no-name thread, Coats And Clark, and Guttermann. I wish I knew if the person took very many samples of different cones of each company thread.

I'm curious to see how the old Coats and Clarks thread looks under a microscope. Every time I have a student who is having machine problems, I drag out my bag of old C&C thread and lay a piece next to their Walmart Coats thread. They get the message quickly. I think it's much smoother than say Gutterman, and it comes in great colors. I had some old coats and clark thread that was 24 years old and gave it away because I didn't like the colors. I never had a problem with it back then but I really didn't do much sewing so who knows. I also have some A&E excell thread that's 24 years old...never used. It has to be better than the stuff A&E makes today. Anyone know the best place to buy "Mettler" thread ?

I think was considered superior due to the fact it was foreign, more than anything. I use Guterman and other similar brands now...also silk quite a bit. But I grew up with Coats and still hold faith that company will one day gain ground once again. Their ad campaigns have always been beautiful. When young, I thought the Coats and Clark thread cabinets were like a candy store display. Many of the "sewing experts" who taught us to use Guterman and such were also selling Guterman in their stores. It went with a theory about the machine feeds on Berninas and others...maybe.
