 4 members like this. Had a collection of fairly new socks that quickly got holes in heel or toes. I I was sewing PJs and wearing a sweatshirt along with doing laundry.
Had an idea of cutting off the foot and serging onto the sleeves and pant legs as cuffs.
They are in their second year of use and still snugly. ------

Date: 11/11/12 8:32 AM The quality of sox has certainly gone down, H wears thru heels and toes quickly, even with the heavyweight winter types. For those who don't remember, Moms used to darn them over litebulbs when I was growing up.
I either use them for dusting mitts, or if you have GK's, they can be used for legging cuffs too.

I patch my and DH's socks...using a honeycomb stitch and a new piece of sock fabric (from another worn out sock) It gives the sock a second life. But now when that wears out I know what to do with the tops! Another use for sock tops....if you hike a lot...when it gets dusty or muddy putting another top like a gaiter over so it fits over the shoe top...helps to keep dust and dirt from getting in the shoes. ------

Date: 11/13/12 4:05 PM I grew up darning socks both by hand and on machine. I do that still but for some reason most of today's socks don't get a small opening that can be closed - it's huge! And if in the heel area, then wearing it after being darned, is quite painful to walk on in shoes- at least for my age and skin now.
