I have made a pattern for myself to wear to ballet class over the last few months and everything fits now. I use fold over elastic for the neck and arm holes, and rubber elastic for the leg holes. One problem I have been having is that the elastic is the legs flips up so that the inside seam is showing. I use the "jalie" technique to sew it on, which can been seen on the pattern company Jalie's youtube page. Has anyone experienced this sand do you know how to fix it?

Sierra - I have had this problem and, if I recall correctly, it was from not stretching the elastic enough through that area. For leg openings you do need to pull the elastic quite taut around the "cheek" and not stretch it much at all on the front of the thigh area. That Jalie video is not working at the moment, so I couldn't check it. I guess it is similar to the Kwik Sew method?

If the elastic is flipping it is usually the result of being too loose. As tourist said 1:1 on the front leg opening and nice and snug over the back opening particularly through the cheek area.

I use a non-roll braided elastic for the leg openings in skating dresses and gymnastics/dance leotards -- I use a knit elastic for the bodybuilder posing suits but then there fit and design is quite different from a regular leg opening.

I make my elastic into a circle then serge it to the leg opening. I then turn to the inside and topstitch using a wide zigzag ( I have a coverstitch but don't use it on the leg openings -- I've never been completely happy with the results. I do use the coverstitch on other areas like armholes and necklines).

Ah - the video is back up. They have used the system where you quarter the elastic and sew it in with equal stretch all the way around, which is great for many applications. But if you are getting flippage, you need to use SheBear's method.

I find quartering works for things like armholes and necklines but I much prefer the "ratio" method for leg openings (and so do my clients).

Thanks, I will be sure to try that out on my next leotard. I will post back here in a few days when I fish the next one!
