My doctor gave me a meter but said I needed a prescription for strips, total hogwash. I paid $120 at Walgreens for 100 test strips. I thought it was odd that I needed a prescription for this. I just found the same thing on Amazon for 50 of them for $20. I guess you can also put them through insurance but with the deducible I pay this is much cheaper. I found this out cos I dropped the cap to the little lancet device and you can't use it without it. So I went looking for another one found that and more. So if any of you are buying supplies through a local pharmacy might will to check online.

If you have access to a Walmart (who doesn't?) look at theirs. Someone posted that the strips there were much cheaper than anywhere else. I think it was $15. You may have to buy their meter but they're usually under $20.

Luckily mine are completely covered by insurance!

If you will go to Walmart and purchase a Relion Prime meter for $16.98, you can buy 50 test strips for $8.98. You will very quickly save enough on the strips to pay for the new meter. It is very accurate, as I compared my readings several times against the meter my doctor gave me. The other strips were way too expensive, so I starting looking for a cheaper alternative very soon after I got the first one.

It all depends on your particular insurance coverage and benefits. For some the copays for a preferred strip are lower than even the cheapest strip you can buy over the counter. All diabetic supplies are over the counter items but you need a prescription only if you want it to go through insurance. If your deductible or copay is high like yours it pays to shop around and compare prices vs copays. A lot also depends on how many strips you need in a month too. 50 vs 200 makes a big difference in total cost.
