Date: 11/13/12 6:49 PM Hi everyone, Now I know that you are not suppose to cut elastic lengthwise but has anyone done it, I just made a beautiful black rayon bias skirt, was putting an elastic waist, I thought I was doing 2.5 inches down for a 2inch elastic band, don't know what happen but became 2.25, but before I realized it I sewed an 1/8 inch topstitch, no room now, so do I pull out the ts or cut the elastic 1/8 and put it in, The fabric is beautiful so I don't want to mess it up but if the elastic will die then I guess I have no choose, has anyone cut elastic? ------

 2 members like this. Some elastic can be cut. One way you might check is pull the elastic taught and sort of look through it. If you can see regular, squarish little dots of light through the stretched elastic you might be able to cut it safely. I'd just buy new cuttable elastic rather than risk ripping out picky stitches.

Date: 11/14/12 11:51 AM Some elastics can be cut and some can't. Braided elastics is the one that can't be cut -- it unravels and runs. It gets narrow when you pull on it. If you pull on it and it doesn't get narrow, then you might want to cut a little bit and see. |

Date: 11/15/12 5:31 PM Knitted elastics are the ones that can be cut. They make great waistbands. It's also nice to have wide knitted elastic on hand as you can always cut it narrower if a project needs it. ------

Date: 11/17/12 5:11 AM I use a LOT of the Stretchrite Sport elastic and I buy it in the 1 1/4" width. I've cut it down on several occasions through the what looks like "stitching lines" in the elastic. It hasn't seemed to harm the elastic and it is still as stretchy as ever without unraveling. It IS a braided elastic.
I should say that there are a lot of "imitators" in the sports elastic line and they all suffer from quality. I used to buy the Stretchrite through Joann's, but they stopped carrying that name brand and have their own brand and it isn't nearly as good as the Stretchrite.
Be warned! I ended up buying a 25 yrd roll of the actual brand off ebay at a very good price - and it is the genuine article. ------

Date: 11/17/12 6:07 AM Being able to cut the sports elastic is really handy to know. I have been wanting some narrower width for the little boys boxers and pj pants but haven't found any. I've been getting rolls of the 1 and 1/4 inch from Newark Dressmaker and or Home Sew which seem to be the same company that have held up well in the men's boxers. I am going to try cutting some down for the grandsons. So thanks for that info. |

Date: 11/17/12 1:40 PM Are you sure those sport elastics are braided rather than knitted? According to some book I just read recently (sorry, don't remember which one) you're not even supposed to sew on braided elastics and they are meant to be used in casing only. When I do a search for stretchrite sport elastics, I only find knitted ones like this. (Stretchrite makes braided elastics, too, but not as sport elastics that I could find.)
In the middle of the spectrum, woven elastics can be sewn on but not good to cut lengthwise either...I just tried it with one and though it doesn't unravel as drastically and quickly as braided ones, it does so eventually with repeated stretching. |
