A Portable Industrial? Hmmmmm.....

Date: 11/14/12 9:12 PM So, I just saw one of these on Craiglist, so I had to look it up: Consew CP206R. The description says it can handle light- to heavy-weight materials and says it has a walking foot and a carrying case. I'm assuming it's a straight stitch only machine, but it might be an interesting option for someone who wants an industrial, but not the big table that goes with it (but yikes, it's 41 pounds!). PS. I'm not looking for another machine...just found this interesting and putting it out there in case anyone wants to take a look. PPS. I must be a sick person, but all of you are too. HA! It is basically a home machine with an upper feed grafted on. Originally these mods were patented by a Texan named Thompson in the 70s (who marketed a similar machine as the Thompson Miniwalker), but the patents have run out. There are other brands like Reliable that make the same machine. The quality in general is low. Sailrite makes one as well which is better quality, but still nowhere as well made as your old Singer 16. I have the Reliable version and have used and cursed it often. I got it to use at home since my big machines are at my office. You will like the 16 better if you get to know it. If you are worried about the space it takes up or speed, then if you or your husband are mechanically adept I can send you info on how to address that. I converted a Consew 206RB to "portable" status for a friend years ago. The Seiko built Consew 206RB is a real industrial compound feed alternating presser machine that has a fantastic reputation. I have no idea why Consew confused matters naming the CP-206R." The "16" this post refers to is a vintage Singer 16-188 that a previous poster had mentioned as an alternative to this Consew. Sailrite definitely rules…I got one last month. It's amazing the thicknesses it can sew through, effortlessly. If you want to sew lighter weights you can also change to smaller needles. And all the support on their web site is beyond comparison. I was looking at the Consew machines for a long time, but always had my doubts. Totally glad I have the Sailrite instead. When our power was out for a week from Hurricane Sandy, it was so cool to be able to sew with the hand crank. The machine is portable, but definitely very heavy.

How do I know? We had to have some carpets cut & the edges covered w/ woven tape. The guy doing it all, cut the carpet pieces for us & sewed the woven tape in front of us. He had a Juki industrial portable w/ walking foot that went zoommmm. Could not believe the power. It had to have power to pierce thru the carpet & 2 sides of woven tape. I think you need to look in a sewing specific catagory like carpet sewing or something. It had wheels on it & he sewed the stuff on the floor.
