Date: 11/15/12 8:58 AM I can get a new phone in January and I plan to upgrade to a smart phone.....I know I know I am the last person on earth to not have a smart phone!!! Well I have been reading reviews and I would like to know what others think who have used them. I am looking at the galaxy s3 or iphone 5. Any info would be helpful. What you like are don't like about the different phones. Thanks so much! -- Edited on 11/15/12 8:59 AM -- |

I eventually went with the iphone4. Two simple reasons the biggest was size. The Galaxy's were too big. I couldn't just slide it into my jeans pocket or into a designated pocket in my purse. If I wanted to take it on a walk, it was awkward. The other was I already had all the car chargers etc.
Some people have said there is a bit of a learning curve with the Galaxy's but from what I was able to see they didn't seem that complicated. I think any new gadget you come across, you will have to learn how it functions. Iphones and Itouches are relatively simple to use. The amount of apps for each is almost the same.
I had to ask myself, what exactly do I want my phone to do first and foremost. The answer for me was texting, talking and occasionally checking email and PR:) I really don't plan on watching TV or playing internet games on it. I may download the occasional book and a few games for when I am waiting in a dr. office but I prefer to use a different device as listening to music etc. wears your battery down and I like my phone charged so I always have a phone. ------ Formerly The Canadian |

Date: 11/15/12 11:20 AM Believe me, you are not the last hold out lol. I just upgraded to a smartphone in August. I got the Iphone 3GS for free but am doing a swap with my daughter for the Iphone 4S that she has now since she's getting a 5. My 3GS will become a spare phone.
I prefer the Iphone because both my daughters have an Iphone and we can easily Facetime over WiFi. My husband opted for the new Windows phone for business purposes. In fact, Facetime is the reason I'm buying my daughter's 4S. My younger daughter Skypes me every Friday from college, and I hate being tied to my computer for Skype. Having Facetime gives me more flexibility to do the Skype kind of thing and do household stuff at the same time.
It makes things easy for me if my kids and I all have Iphones. It is just our own set of circumstances. If you have others tied to your plan, it's something to think about. -- Edited on 11/15/12 11:22 AM -- ------ Big 4 Pattern size 12, RTW bottom: 6, RTW jacket 8, RTW top (no size fits me well!)

Date: 11/15/12 12:00 PM Both phones are great and no phone is perfect. I have the iPhone 4s and like it because it is small enough to fit into a pants or shorts pocket. Anything larger would not fit as well. The iPhone is very easy to use, and there are a lot of youtube tutorials for the things I had to learn. I had a 1st gen. Motorola Droid, so it was a change for me to go to iPhone, but I love the iPhone over that old Droid. Newer Droids are much better, I am sure. |

There have been a lot of complaints about that map app that iPhone created. For that reason, I have not downloaded the OS upgrade on my 4s. I do not want to lose the Google Maps.
Droids all work on a Google platform (or they did) so you've still got Google Maps. |

Date: 11/15/12 12:42 PM Thanks for posting about Facetime, we didn't know you could use a smart phone w/ Skype & hate to be bound to the computer for Skype.
Alot of family & friends back east & by the time hubby gets home & wakes up enough to Skype, it's too late. An iphone would be great,. |

Date: 11/15/12 2:23 PM Just to clarify, I believe Facetime is Iphone specific. So if your family members also have an Iphone, you're good to go. ------ Big 4 Pattern size 12, RTW bottom: 6, RTW jacket 8, RTW top (no size fits me well!)

Date: 11/15/12 3:47 PM I have an iphone 4, but am planning to go to a galaxy 3. The main reason is the new connector on the iPhone 5. The last straw was yesterday, when I tried to put some photos on my iPhone to show friends I was meeting, and found I could not do this without using iTunes. Grrr! I hate being tied to iTunes.
DD has a new galaxy and from what I have seen it is lovely to use. I believe there is a version of face time, but not 100% certain. Maybe someone else can confirm. I love the large screen for photos and it is very light. ------ Taking in is happier than letting out.

Date: 11/15/12 5:03 PM I think Ryan's mom is right, facetime is Apple specific. I am not positive but I believe it will run on wi-fi and cellular with the 5 but only on wi-fi with the 4. I believe this is also on the ipads.
I also use this to talk to my DD, across the country, and I love it, we are able to see each other, show each other new fabric etc. I find it runs much smoother than Skype however I don't know that I would use that feature for calling my friends across town though. Also, I don't know that you can call out of your own country but not sure about that. ------ Formerly The Canadian |
