Is this just me?

When I take the trouble to read a review, unless the review only says, "This [machine, pattern, etc.] was great.", I always rate the review either Helpful or Very Helpful.

Not only does it help people know that others appreciate the trouble they took to write the review--and encourages them to keep it up, but it also helps them to get those cherished little yellow stars. If a person is new to PR, it's especially important to be encouraging.

I have been reading reviews for Kwik Sew 3658, which I am planning to sew, and I see where some reviews have 100, 200, or 300 views; however, less than a handful of people actually took the time to rate the review. And many of them go into some detail of how they changed the pattern, pictures of garments, and things to watch out for when sewing. To me this is unfair and perhaps even just rude, when someone went to so much trouble.

Do others think rating the review is important?

Total Stash at end of 2013 -- about 750 yards.
2014 Total Items Sewn -- 1
2014 Total Stash Used -- 2.5
2014 Total Items Embroidered -- 2
2014 Goal: Sew 1 garment per month. Less stash at end of 2014 than at end of 2013.

I think you are right, it's important to acknowledge the time someone has taken to write a review. I personally really appreciate the comments people add, it helps you find out what people think of the review/project.

I am guilty myself of reading through a review and not rating it helpful/very helpful. I should make more of an effort. Thank you for reminding me. As you say, it is only polite.

Yes, I've seen that also..a while back I saw a review that had over 100 views, two comments, and no ratings! This review went into the adjustments made, what type of fabric needed and other very helpful comments.
Just a note..due to the mathematical formulas to get stars, a helpful rating actually hurts the reviewer. Do a very helpful or nothing. I believe Deepika was going to adjust the system, but I don't believe it has been done as yet.

Lucy, I agree. Some of the reviewers are so good at detailing and that takes a lot of time and effort. I have based many decisions on whether to buy or not to buy a pattern, because of the review. If someone has an issue with the pattern/garment, but is able to get though it and posts the journey, sometimes it gives me the extra boost I need to pick that pattern up and give it a try.

Thank you. I have been leaving comments but not ratings! I'll remember to do this in the future. I appreciate the time and thoughtfulness that members put into sharing in reviews and in posts.

Thanks for raising this topic. I had no idea about stars and ratings connection. I have rated a few of the reviews but will certainly be diligent in future .

Lucy- thanks for raising this issue and the way you expressed it. I'm coming up on my 1-year PR anniversary at the end of the year. I've used PR a lot, but there's many things I haven't yet penetrated. I hadn't thought much about out how the yellow stars "appear". They're earned! I too have learned a great deal from many in-depth reviews. I comment occasionally, but realize I have to step up to rating them as well.

Here's a great big shout out Thanks! to all on PR. I've gained so much knowledge and pleasure in the past year. I'm grateful for you. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving wherever you are.

If I read a review I always rate it, but don't leave comments because I never know what to say. Usually there have been 10 people ahead of me that left a comment and everything has already been said.
I here by promise to rate and comment from now on.

This is a timely subject for me who does not usually engage in social media talk much unless I feel extremely strong about something. I was very, very tiffed today reading a feature thread and felt the PR Member was just trying to get people to go to their website and give them votes. I value my time highly and this trickery was like the straw that broke the camels back - as I was seriously thinking about writing Deepika a letter about the member's misuse of the site (but I didn't as I didn't want to give the person a bad mark). I think Lucy in Virginia has a good point about giving a rating as it would be more beneficial (than a comment to me). It seems that a few PR members seem to ALWAYS comment on a lot of threads on PR - you can always expect to see them making comments - when being silent would have been better because the comment really didn't say 'dit' IMHO. I wonder how they get any sewing (or anything else for that matter) done commenting so much. Thanks Lucy in Virginia. I'm going to begin rating more starting with this helpful thread.
