How far is TOO FAR? How far would you drive for a great deal on a machine?

It got me thinking...would I really drive 13 hours to Allbrands in Baton Rouge? 26 hours in a car is a long haul. The current price being offered is 5999$ which is $1500 less than the Babylock dealer is asking for the equivalent machine here in Indy. I thought it would be fun to see some stories about how far you have gone/would go for a really great machine/deal?!? ------ I think every machine company has something great to offer. Vintage or cutting edge - everyone has its place!

The lady and her husband were headed to Florida from Nova Scotia and we met in Massachusetts. Can you go by bus or train and rent a car for the return trip to cut down on the driving?

Date: 11/18/12 8:50 AM I wouldn't drive that far for several reasons. Are you really saving that much after paying for food, lodging and gas? Plus you will not have dealer support and that is very important. What are you going to do if it needs serviced or has constant issues? I got a very good price, much better than I would have gotten closer to home. But, after the sale I was on my own. I've changed brands since then and am so happy with my Bernina dealer. Date: 11/18/12 9:22 AM That's a huge savings and I'd admire someone for making that kind of trek to save that kind of money but I personally would not do it. But, I would try to see if my local dealer would match it to save me the trip bc obviously that's a huge spread and you're indicating you're willing to do it. Failing that, as stated above, Allbrands does ship!

And on top of that, what about service? Would your local dealer service it, or would the dealer be blase about it because you purchased it somewhere else? Having said that, shipping the machine will cost much less than driving 26 hours round trip, plus hotel and meals. But if you have the time and plan to make some stops along the way to make a trip of it, then why not. I do find that after driving 10-12 hours I am a wee bit grumpy, stiff and I would not want to do it two days in a row. Even if there were two drivers, for me it is too much time in the car. We regularly drive to AB for a long weekend. It is no counting the ferry, a 12 hour trip over several mountain passes, no long straight stretches of highway in BC. For a bunch of reasons, and I don't mind driving. 1. Gas 2. Time 3. Tiring and I would be crumpy. 4. No dealer support and not just for the machine, I like my local dealers they are so nice to me, and because I have a relationship with them when the machine I bought was a lemon, though it took 6 months of back and fourth and four trips in with that heavy thing they made it right. 5. I would drive 2 hours one way if there was something in the area that attracted me to it other then a machine. Now I would not drive that distance BUT on the other hand. 1. It is a BIG difference in price. 1,500 covers a lot of mailing costs, However, I did just buy a pricey machine and it needed tweaking right out of the box so I waited for 15minutes and the tech who is really good took care of it. Now perfection. Sometimes if there is something wrong can you deal with the aggravation of that. 2. If the only way I could have that particular machine was because I bought it second hand on ebay or from one of the sewing sites then I would have no dealer support anyway and mailing would be the only way to go. -- Edited on 11/18/12 10:58 AM -- ------ Bernina 750Q, 635E, 380, Serger 1100DC

I have about 5 dealers in a 30 mile radius so maybe up it to 30. Prefer no more than 5. Gas, time and general out-of-my-routine are all things I don't do. Yup. Stuck in the very comfy mud thank you.
