Date: 11/18/12 8:06 AM I'm making Simplicity 4047, the skirt, which is an unlined skirt with no waistband and a kick pleat.
It originally has twill tape to stablise the waistband, so I'll keep that.
Then I want to add a lining and keep the kick pleat.
I'm assuming I just cut the skirt front and back from lining fabric, don't cut the kick pleat, and subsitute a seam at the top of the skirt for the original narrow hem with twill tape (sewing the tape into the seam)?
Then do I just do a narrow hem on the back slit edges of the lining?
The skirt has no top facing either, which I've seen some recommend you keep in a lined skirt. So anything I can do to keep the lining from showing?
I think I've only lined skirts with waistbands before. |

Date: 11/18/12 11:12 AM Katie, I sewed up McCalls 3830 which is very similar to your pattern. The McCalls has a facing but no lining. I cut the lining exactly like I cut the fashion fabric. I flat sewed the facing to the lining material then sewed it on to the fabric fabric. The pattern did not have a kick-pleat just an open seam but I added one. I cut the lining the same and sewed the edges of the pleat together then turned pressed and hemmed both (the lining just a tad shorter than the fashion fabric. It is easy to cut a facing-you need to follow the lines of the pattern (top portion and the sides minus the darts) and about 2" wide. I have been going to do a review as I ran into problems and did not get alot of help on here and it had been years and years since I had done anything like this. I can add pictures later if you need them. The problem with just adding a lining to the fashion fabric is that the lining will turn out because the fabric is heavier-I don't know if the twill tape will fix that. HTH |

Date: 11/21/12 5:19 AM I'm initially sewing the lining as a muslin - to fit my fairly full abdomen - so I can't really do the facing right now. I guess I can construct it with no facing, and then see how it goes and add one later and cut down the lining if necessary?
Anyone else got a good tip for this? Thanks! |

Date: 11/21/12 6:20 AM You can sew a lining exactly as you did your skirt (using the same pattern pieces), then finish the inner waist with cotton grosgrain ribbon. Creativebug has a free video tutorial (hosted by Gretchen Hirsch) on their site. Hope this helps! |

Date: 11/21/12 10:50 AM That looks great, as I'm planning a heavy-ish fabric too. |

Date: 11/29/12 8:27 AM OK, sugarduck, that looks like a good video tutorial but unless I'm doing something wrong it isn't free - you have to subscribe.
Does anyone know of a free tutorial for doing this? |
