Here are some of the coats / t shirts I have been making for the shelter dogs.
I apologize in advance for the poor pictures. I have an inexpensive digital camera and the location for taking the pictures, attic with a south facing window, isn't ideal, but it is one of the few blank and accessible walls.
I also want to apologize for the neck strain you may experience. Photobucket was giving me fits, as usual, and would not let me edit the pictures. So instead of being able to rotate them to the proper orientation, they are sidways.
Anywho, if you don't mind some neck and eye strain, here they are:
Dog Coats
Please excuse the wrinkles.

Date: 11/22/12 5:12 AM Oh those lucky dogs! Boy, have you put in some work on them. I loved making coats when I was up north, worked with rescues there. I am thinking of doing blankets here since coats arent needed as much. Kudos to your work. ------ re-living my youth through sewing... |

Date: 11/23/12 3:24 PM Hi,
Thank you for letting me know the link was not working.
I fixed it.
I apologize for the inconvenience.
On another note, I really scored for the dogs today. On my way home from PT, I saw two futon cushions at the curb. After a lot of wrestling, I managed to get them in the vehicle.
After I wash the covers, I will be cutting the filler into sections and I will also cut teh cover into sections. I will need to add material to cover the sides of each of the cushions, but that isn't a problem. The material won't match, but I don't think the dogs will mind.
I will be able to make at least 12 large cushions for the shelter dogs.
I was also able to take the seat portion of a reclining chair. I removed the cushion from the frame. After a little repair work, I will either have one very large cushion, or I may make it into two smaller cushions.
More than likely the dogs will tear apart everything I am making. Stress causes them to be destructive. But hopefully a few of teh cushions and coats will last and teh dogs will have some enjoyment from using them.

Thank you for your kind words.
I hope that the dogs enduring the hardship of shelter life will be able to have something that not only helps keep them warm, but something that will be theirs. They have so very little in life.
If anyone is interested, I copied two of the coats my sister bought from Walmart for her chihuaha, to make the small coats.
The rest of the garments, with the exception of the large blue/ purple coat, was made using Simplicity 9520. The large blue/ purple coat was made "trial and error," using my dog as a model.
I also have, but have not yet used, Simplicity 2303 and Simplicity 2318. The latter is a mens / boys pajama pattern, but I bought it for the small dog coat. Those patterns were purchased from JoAnns during their Simplicty pattern $1 sale.
With the exception of the two blue small dog coats, all of the other garments are made from repurposed items.
I met a woman at the Pet Value store and she was telling me that she volunteers for a cat hospice. She also told me that one of the things they desperately need are washable toys for the cats. She said the cats would love terry cloth.
With the left over scraps of terry cloth towels I am making toys for the cats. Since they are being made from scraps, they are odd shapes, and no two look alike. I hope the cats will enjoy digging their claws into the terry cloth. The items I have made so far are about six inches in length, with varying circumferences. They will be able to put a kitty bear hug on them as well as bat them around. And the staff will be able to wash and dry them.
I hear my sewing machine calling me.

Date: 11/30/12 9:28 PM Hi All,
While I was in the sewing dept. at Walmart yesterday I commented to the person working there that I am making dog coats for the shelter dogs. I couldn't help but look at all of the bolts of fleece and think about all of the coats and beds I could make.
If only my wallet was as big as my heart.
Both she and another customer started talking to me about the dog coats I am making. I told them most of the coats are being made from repurposed items - sheets, towels, pants, shirts, coats, jackets, etc. Almost simultaneously they asked me if I was interested in several bags of clothes. They each have several large garbage bags full of clothing sitting around. The woman who works there is going to ask her friends to go through their closets and donate their unwanted items to me, too.
AND ..... I don't even have to go and pick up the bags. The customer drives past my house almost daily, so she will drop them off. The lady who works at WM lives in the next town and she, too, said she would drop the bags off on the porch.
I almost didn't say anything about making dog coats. I am usually too shy to speak to people. But I am very happy taht I did.
More items from which to make coats and stuffed toys for the cats at the hospice will soon be arriving. I can't wait!!!!
