Date: 11/23/12 6:50 AM I'll be making a stack of receiving blankets for a friend this weekend. It's been a while since i've needed any. Does anyone have any recommendations for what size they should be? All I remember from those days, is that the ones that came from a store were too small to be of any use. TIA. |

Date: 11/23/12 8:33 AM I've recently made several of them myself. I pre-washed the flannel and then made them square. Just folded the fabric over and cut them as large as I could. I think they were aprox. 40 by 40. I chose to do a narrow rolled hem instead of using the serger. Figured it would be stronger and hold up longer from many washings. My daughter ( very picky ) is very happy with the ones I made for her. Much nicer than the purchased ones. When you take a wet baby out of the bath it is nice to be able to wrap them up completley.
I purchased 2 1/4 yards of flannel, as I said pre-washed and then was also able to get 2 burp cloths and 2 washcloths ( fabric was doubled so they are nice and thick, I did use the serger to finish the edges of these items ) out of the fabric.
I enjoyed this fast and easy project.

2 members like this. I used an on sale flat flannel bedsheet and basically made the size that worked out with the least wasted fabric. It's been a long time but I think I probably used the fold-and-tear method of cutting unless the flannel wouldn't tear. We were lucky we had several matching blankets because they became the daughter's blankie and we were able to have duplicates to wash and to leave at the baby sitter's home with no complaints from the child. Thirty plus years later she now says that she always wondered how her blanket managed to be in so many places at once. |

1 member likes this. I believe that you want them at least 36" square - however I typically make them to match the width of the fabric -- so 42-44 inches square. |

I also like to make them square to the width of the yardage, that makes them big enough to use for a long time, covers a car seat, can tuck into sides of crib, cover a nursing mom ect... I use flannel on one side and cute cotton print on the other with inserted ric-rac border, too cute. ------

1 member likes this. I also did the 40" square. I put two 40" square pieces of fabric wrong sides together and then used the 9mm stitch on my machine to randomly quilt the two together. The flannel I had wasn't all that thick. I serged the edges together then crocheted around the edges a few rows just to make it pretty. ------
