Care to join me for a Fabric Fast??

Dates run from today (the day AFTER Black Friday, which is the day after Thanksgiving in the US and a day known for sales) through Thanksgiving 2013.

This is the most flexible fast you'll ever be on because you set your own rules and exceptions to those rules.

My rule:

1. I can only buy fabric for immediate use if stash has been shopped and there is nothing suitable.
1a. (and this is important for me) I can only buy enough immediate use fabric for ONE (1) item.

My exceptions:

1. If the $2.97 discount table at G-Street Fabrics is TOO tempting, I can make a purchase BUT
1a. I can only buy ONE (1) item and I cannot go back the very next day to buy another.

2. I have a planned fabric shopping trip to New York with Peggy Sagers of Silhouette Patterns. My only limitation there will be my preset budget.

3. Muslin can be bought in quantity.

I think that's it for me. I'm trying to make these rules/exceptions something I really can live with this year. My ultimate goal is not to add to the stash and I hope these rules/exceptions will get me to that goal.

I'm absolutely in!

I noticed you all during this last year, but just couldn't make that leap. Now I'm ready to shop my own fabric store & make the fabulous wardrobe (that's in my head) come to life.

My Rule:
I need nothing for myself...if I can't find what I need, keep digging!

My Exceptions:
1) I can buy good shirtings for my 23 year old son who is transitioning to adult life and needs a wardrobe update. He has scoliosis fitting issues, so I'm sewing for him.

2) I can occasionally buy cute cottons for my charity sewing, Dress A Girl Around the World. I have nothing like that in my stash.

Wow, I feel better already!

I am in again. I bought 10 yards last year, and now that I am working a bit more, I have even less time to sew. So my goal is to not buy fabric just because I have a little bit more money. I am saving for siding and windows for our home, and HS tuition for 2 teens.

Yes, I'm trying this again but with a little twist. I allotted myself a small monthly budget for fabric and an even smaller one for patterns/notions. The only type of fabric I don't have are solid colored men's cotton shirting in jewel tones. I plan to really shop from stash this year for my projects. I am planning to take a few tailoring and couture sewing courses this year so all the money for fabric will be going towards the class fees. I'll be doing my best to stick strictly to the budget. Who knows, maybe at the end of the year I can have a nice shopping spree.

Thanks for starting this thread, I'm so in this year. When I first saw the title of the post I clicked in to find out why the fast was only a few days long......good to know that we are committed for a full year.

I realize that when I don't have time to sew, I buy fabric. And I have been very busy with non sewing projects recently so my buying is off the hook. I recently updated my inventory spreadsheet to an all time high of over 450 yards. This is ridiculous - and when the total gets big I feel like I'm carrying a weight around with me. So I'm going to quit carrying this load of bricks over the next 12 months.

My personal rules:
1) I'm committed to staying on the plan for 12 months, so my personal starting date will be November 8, 2012 (the last purchase I made)

2) In addition to sewing from the stash, I will reexamine every piece and be brutally honest - if it just isn't me I will get rid of it. I normally verify my inventory in the late spring so the due date for this culling is May 31, 2013

3) I will only buy fabric if it is needed for an immediate project and then only in the quantity needed.

4) I recognize that I am powerless over $1 fabric in downtown LA, so I will limit my purchases to only fabric intended for my personal consumption (not family members), fabric that would make good muslins and only in cuts of 6 yards or less.

I'm going to print this message and post it inside a cabinet door in my sewing room .... and refer to it often. In the interest of being totally honest my stash total was 469 on November 8th ..... I will report back on November 8th next year.

------
2012 : starting stash 386, net additions 206, used 164, ending stash 428...I'm never going to get in front of this pile of fabric!

Count me in!!! I need this group for support.
My rules:
1. Shop from stash first includes all fabric in my possession, use
up what I have first.
2. If fabric or item not in my stash, or not enough yardage, I am
allowed to purchase only the amount needed.
2. Hording/saving it for another day is not allowed, use it up!!!
3. I am making all my own clothes for a year including intimates, so
use up that stash so I will have something to wear
4. Make dd clothes (most of them) this year to sew up stash
5. Sew every week, even if only a few minutes
6. Be generous, give fabric away to those less fortunate

I can add or delete as necessary.......this is going to be another great year!!!

I am in. I did a good job last year shopping only from my stash.

1. The only time I will buy fabric is if I need it to finish a project.
2. No impluse pattern buying.

That about covers it for me.

Do you think buying fabric for muslins counts as fabric buying? I think it falls under "need to finish a project". I am going to make a winter coat this year and before I cut into my $25 a yard wool I want to make a muslin. Hard to find inexpensive fabric with the same qualities as wool for a muslin.

I'm in. I was so proud of myself for after filling my cart at one of the online stores yesterday, I closed my tab and walked away.

I've bought a lot of fabric lately, and no matter how tempting the sales are, I need to sew some of my recent purchases before buying more.

And that, of course, is because I wrote the date in incorrectly!

CynthiaSue, could you please fix the title for me and make it read 24 Nov 12 to 29 Nov 13?

Thanks,

JEF
