what weight for bias binding? how much lighter than the garment can it be?

The vest will be of a medium coating weight tweed. I want to use some complementary cotton lawn I have in stash. Is the lawn of a suitable weight for the binding? In general, how heavy or light should the binding be in comparison to the garment fabric?

If it is only decorative, it might work. I would be inclined to use the similar weight/fabric type. I think the lawn is too thin. That's my opinion and someone else might chime in here. You could try it on some fabric scraps to see if you like it. HTH

Date: 11/25/12 8:29 PM I find that bias tape of lighter-weight fabric works better anyway. I have never tried to match the weight of my fashion fabric. Most lawn is a bit sheer. I would be concerned that the stitching and tweed would show through in a not so pleasant way. They will also wear differently. But I will definitely do a test on scraps of the wool. The pattern doesn't have facings or lining. It just calls for the binding to finish the outer edges. I suppose it will get some wear around the arm holes. The lawn isn't especially sheer.
