Is fabric too thick?

I am trying to make buttonholes on straps that are two thicknesses of fabric and an interfacing and about 2" wide with the hems inside on each side. I have made a test buttonhole on the same thickness of fabric and they work fine, but on the actual dress, the strap jams and the fabric doesn't move. Is there an up adjustment that I could lift the foot up a bit to allow for the thick hems on each side? I couldn't find anything in the manual.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've never tried it, but I've seen pictures in sewing books to use folded up fabric around the buttonhole foot to level it. I admit that I've been skeptical that it would work.

Some machines also have a plate that is supposed to help with that. I bought one for my Janome, but I haven't actually sewn any buttonholes that have given me any problems since I bought it, so I don't know if it actually helps.

I had a similiar problem putting a bottonholes the the waistband of boys jeans- it caught on the side edges. I had to go over where it stuck or skipped with a manual satin stitch. I tried the piece that elevates the foot to even it out. It helped some.
Hope someone has an answer.
