What is a relief? sewing front and back relieves?

I get what most of the directions are since there are no photos, only directions, but as I read thru the instructions, it tell you to sew the front darts and back darts and then sew the relieves. Yes, r-e-l i e v e s. I have absolutely NO clue what that means. Here is the actual wording starting: #1: Apply the fusing to wrong side of front bands, stand-up collars and back neckline facing. #2: stitch front waist darts. Stitch back shoulder darts. Slash start depths. #3: Stitch front relieves. #4: Stich back relieves. Stitch middle back edges. It goes on from there stitching shoulders, side edges etc. I googled it and couldn't come up with anything. if someone could tell me what this is, then perhaps I could make this. thank you in advance...... -susie

Date: 12/2/12 3:06 PM Did it originate from a non-English-speaking country? If so, maybe it was a mistranslation. Burda, for example, is pretty famous for that kind of thing. beauturbo Advanced CA USA Member since 5/2/09 Posts: 1436	Login to reply to this post In reply to avatrx << Like this post Date: 12/2/12 5:41 PM In some way older patterns, and styles from other times, things with a collar pieces that are not sewn on, but turned and flipped back, like the edges of the fold back lapels on a Jacket sometimes are/were called "revere" or a "revere collar". Revere might not be too far from "releives" if some kind of typo. It does kind of sound like the kind of thing you might get though, if using a computer for some language translation and maybe not just a real person instead. But possibly if it has some kind of flip back lapel or collar pieces on both the front and back of it, could "releives" be reveres instead there?

Those instructions are translated from Russian by someone who isn't a native Speaker. Your best bet is almost to see if you have a similar pattern in your stash and use those instructions instead.
