I am trying to find a pattern for a mandarin jacket that is a bit more fitted than the typical look. It is for a dancer on pointe, and I would prefer her to have a sleeker, slimmer line than the costume we currently have, which is that sort of pajama top style (for lack of a better word). Anyone know of any?

There is a Jalie figure skating dress pattern that has the mandarin style and could maybe be adapted for your needs.

Jalie 2800

The line drawings will give you a clearer view of the pattern.

Folkwear has a pattern for a cheongsam: Folkwear 122 also, New look 6203 here might work; and then there's a modern sewing pattern for download here

You might want to look at the costumes shown here as worn by various performers of the Chinese Dance in the Nutcracker.

There are quite a few snug tops like the Jalie pattern, usually in combinations with pants. I notice a bit of a tendency to wear Siamese-ish costumes for this dance, too.

We haven't been to the Nut Cracker this year, but we did take our kids to the Radio City Rockettes matinee, and their version of the Chinese dance was to wear a 2 peice with the pants and a crossover top. The lead had a mushroom cap thing going.

You guys are great! Thank you so much. I can't tell you how long I have spent googling and couldn't come up with what I was looking for.
