pfaff serger what would be a good deal on a used one
x57k2 Advanced MS USA Member since 11/26/12 Posts: 2	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 12/3/12 2:18 PM is a pfaff coverlock 4862 very hard to use ? i have had a bernette for years and works good. but of course doesn't have cover hem . i want to be able to do that and a nice rolled hem. will it do anything else ? thanks for the help.

Neither of the Pfaff 4862 and 4874 coverlock machines are entry-level machines, imo. Pfaff 4862 coverlock info My long-time Pfaff dealer disliked both models, thought they were too difficult to use. That said, I did like my 4874, but have to agree; it was difficult to use. Enough so that I finally gave it up and went with a Babylock. Wouldn't go back for anything. ------ I heart Panzy, Pfaff Creative Performance, the sewing machine love of my life! And Rupert (Pfaff 2023), Baby (BL Enlighten), Victor (BLCS), Ash (Bernina 350SE), Pal (Bernina 530), Kee (Bernina 750) and the Featherteen Flock! Most of all, I heart Woo (HimmyCat). I have used this machine and it's easy after you are familiar with the workings of a serger. This machine was made for Pfaff prior to the merger and has been discontinued. Current feet don't fit and parts can be a time waiting game. For serger newbie get a current model with support and you'll be happier. If it's from a dealer who will support you and teach you that would be different. I had an Elna prior to the pfaff that threaded and operated similarly but was much noisier. I find it easy to use and have had no difficulty with threading. I switch easily back and forth from overlocking to coverstitch. I rarely adjust the automatic tensions. I took it in for servicing for the first time this last summer (yes, first and only time in 10 years, and nothing wrong, I just thought a professional cleaning would be good), and my dealer told me this model was one of the best models put out by pfaff. The 4862 seems of the same era. As far as a good deal, I don't know--- seems like I paid about $1500 new. It does a triple coverstitch and has 5 threads so might be next model up from 4862. I like mine and it matches my pfaff 7550 nicely. I've been tempted by a separate coverstitch machine just for convenience, and when babylock makes one with brighter lights and lay-in tension and an LED screen then I may buy one. Now that my main sewing machine is a Bernina 550, I would like a brighter light in my serger. But for now, I am very happy with my pfaff serger.
