Feed dog cover questions

I'm thinking about buying a Singer Monogrammer (the regular model, not the deluxe) for my 500. But I'm confused by opinions about which feed dog covers can or cannot be used. Some sources I've read say that you must have the rectangular cover. (I can't recall the number.) Others say that you can use the cover that comes with a buttonholer, which I own. Others disagree whether you can simply raise the feed dog plate and set the stitch length to zero. (Which I have done for buttonholes.)

Can anyone clear this up for me? What have you actually used that worked?

Thanks,
Tate

All of the above. There is one more possibility to add to the mix: tape an index card over the feed dogs if they cannot be lowered and poke a hole for the needle's path.

Test all the options you have available to you to see what works best. Do this with each type of fabric.

I have the monogrammer for my Singer 503, but not the feed plate. I just raise the throat plate to "cover" the feed dogs and that works fine.

Oh, and if you're interested, here is my
"Review" of the monogrammer with my Rocketeer - on my blog. I'd give it a "So-So" rating. It's okay, not great. I wouldn't pay more than $10-$20 for it though...
