Date: 12/5/12 1:18 PM Let me be honest here. I am on a level 3 city and guilds dressmaking course. I work full time. I have several sewing projects on my "imminent to do" list. This is not a poor me rant. I'm quite happy!
But when I have a pattern in my stash and see someone has gone and reviewed it here on pattern review, it makes me get itchy fingers. As in go and get the fabric for it. Even though the poor thing hasn't got a chance in being sewn for at least a little while.
So I see a review for Vogue 1266 which is something I have been eyeing up for a while as a replacement for an existing winter coat.
Today I went to my favourite fabric shop. Can you see where this is going? When I went to pick up my bike from the repair shop the assistant started laughing as I wheeled it out of the shop and said it looked like a carthorse and not a bike.
I am now the happy owner of 3.7 meters of dark brown italian wool cashmere (80/20) blend fabric, matching dax lining and contrasting black wool for the collar/cuffs (and notions). The entire bill was £55. Bargain!
But the bag is huge. This probably means I have to rearrange my fabric storage to fit it in. Pesky details.........anyone else like this?

 3 members like this. Oh, *I* am--but it's not so much with fabric or patterns as it is with PROJECTS! In my head, I am a much faster seamstress than I am in reality. I'm lucky to get 3-4 projects done A YEAR, but I probably buy enough for a dozen. Sigh.
...And you and I may have come to fisticuffs over that brown cashmere if we'd been in the shop together. LOL ------

Date: 12/5/12 6:54 PM Gosh! I'm just now waking up to the idea that it takes more time to make a project than it does to buy the fabric for it. Everything I have is busting out--my fabric storage cabinet, the fabric totes under the bed, and the work organizer in my sewing room. And with all that I love to do for my Etsy shop, it doesn't look like I'll get anything done in the near future that has to do with garments. But I'm trying really hard to make a wild outfit for my exercise class, to promote some sewing classes. ------

2 members like this. Totally know what you mean! I had to put a ban on myself from adding to my stash. Not that mine has ever reached epic proportions or anything, but I'm quite frugal and I don't see the point of throwing money away on projects that aren't likely to be completed. Right now anything I sew I only shop from my stash and only allow myself to buy filler (lining, trims, etc.) |

Date: 12/6/12 10:26 AM What interesting timing! I am right this very minute sitting here with about $160 in my cart at fabricmart! (I also did this last week but managed to talk myself out of it).
I love fabric, even if I do not know what I will make from it, if it catches my eye I feel like I have to have it. I am bad with patterns too but not anything like I am with fabric.
Now, I am still new back to sewing, so its not like I have tons of it yet, but I probably really do not need anything new right now. ------

What truth! You put this into a concise statement that I have not been able to articulate myself.
I gave up buying fabric because I have at least 4 projects (with fabric) that I really, really want to make. That was a year ago. I am stuck in the detail work of fitting muslins and adjusting patterns.
Buying that fabric took a few minutes. Getting to the cutting stage -- much less sewing it up -- is taking months.
I'm putting this on the wall as a reminder:
It takes more time to make a project than it does to buy the fabric for it.

Subject: you know the phrase eyes bigger than stomach? Date: 12/6/12 4:31 PM Oh lord, this is such an apt post. My eyes are way Way WAY bigger than my sewing stomach. I've been thinking about putting an official ban on purchasing more fabric, but I just haven't committed to it.
Case in point: I'm using 3 sweater knits to make Christmas gifts, so I decided I could buy some more fabric (Umm, no, don't do it!). So, I'm using up 6-8 yards and I bought TWENTY ONE from Fabric Mart on Tuesday.
Did I mention that I have 17 cubes of a 5x5 (25 cubes total) Ikea Expedit bookcase filled with fabric and more quilting and coating fabric in a separate location? ETA: It's kind of icky and indulgent to see this in writing.
Pretty fabric makes me so weak. :(
P.S. rmusic1 - that cashmere coating sounds beyond lovely!

If I have a pattern that I want to make and don't have the fabric for I just move on to another. Not like I don't have a million zillion patterns I want to try. I usually don't need to buy the extra to do the project either. I would be ok but those dratted final clearance tables are my down fall so I try to avoid them. Now instead of buying some yardage I just buy the bolt. I don't have to store my fabric inside the house or I would have had intervention long ago. I have to admit when I do look at fabric the sticker shock makes me glad I have a huge stash. I don't think I'd buy very much excess if I were paying a small fortune per cut. It's not even the money I am just on the cheap side which isn't all that frugal when I consider what I keep sitting around. When I occasionally buy a yard for some project the stash looks wonderful to pull from however. |
