I've recently become enamored with vintage sewing books and patterns. I've purchased several books and a few patterns, mainly through eBay. While I'm willing to shell out more money for some books and patterns, I'm generally surprised to see the prices of some of the Vintage Vogue patterns (upwards of $40.00) and the Vogue New Book for Better Sewing (easily close to or over $100.00). I think the most I've paid for a vintage sewing book is $21.00 and for a pattern $9.00.

I'm curious, what drives the prices of some vintage items higher than others. Also, if you're willing to share, where's your line with how much you'd pay for a vintage sewing book or pattern?

I have paid $50 for a vintage book on fitting. Then I paid $40 for an out of print book on seiwng knits.
I am not into vintage patterns so have never paid big bucks for them.

AdaH: I'm always on the hunt for a good fitting book. Did you find them on eBay? What were the books?

I would be willing to pay a bit more for a popular book I know is good than for an unknown book I've never heard of which could be good or could be a dud. I've bought many "cheap" duds so far and they do add up! I suspect Gertie's blog and now book has much to do with the popularity of Vogue New Book for Better Sewing. Books that have been mentioned, reviewed, praised, etc., in popular sewing blogs will fetch more just because more people know about them.

I recently [within the last month] bought the same book at my area thrift shop for 50 cents!

Do check your local thrifts..I've found several 1940's books for $1.99 to $5.00 and my Singer Sewing Library is almost complete at $1.00 each.
It just takes some looking and repeat visits..but then you get the thrill of finding something neat!

The most expensive one was "Fitting Commercial Patterns" by Jan Minott. I bought it on Amazon. It came from a Goodwill store in CA. The only other book I paid a lot for was "Sewing with Knits" by Connie Long also from Amazon.

I have found old books on sewing at Half Price Books. That is where I found "The Vogue Sewing Book", 1970 addition. I got that for $1.

Thanks AdaH. I think I'll check out Half Price Books and keep visiting my local thrift stores.
