I am planning to make a skirt to which I wish to add a lining and underlining. How do you hem the skirt when adding an underling?

If hand-hemming, does the thread pierce both the underlining and lining or just the underlining? Seems the latter would put stress on the underlining fabric.

If using a tape or ribbon of sorts to encase both seam allowances, I can't even begin to see this in my head.

Any suggestions, pictures, etc. welcome!

I generally hand sew the hem to the underlining. Because the fashion fabric and underlining are attached at the side seams, I've never found this puts stress on or distorts the underlining. It makes for a beautiful invisible hem.

This silk dupioni was underlined with silk organza and the hand hem sewn only into the organza.

Ditto this skirt. I then hand sewed lace trim to the turned up fashion fabric edge, not catching the right side. You can see that the hem is totally invisible from the outside.

Nicegirl,

These are lovely. Thank you so much for the pictures, they really clarify things. And now I am so inspired!
