No picking colors....get what you get.... I can't believe how gorgeous these fabrics are.....I see the same Italian fabrics in Europe for well over 75eu. Next time he offers wool bundles....I highly recommend.

The quality is impressive and the cuts are generous. The wools appear to be from Zegna and Tom Ford (high end man's suits from Neiman Marcus!). The staff are super friendly. They are also running a 50% sale. Now is to find time to sew this jewels.

The first time I got a Michael's bundle, I was astonished at the fabrics, and put teensy swatches of them into my wallet for opportunistic notions buying. I still had them in my wallet when I went through Heathrow airport, peeked sideways at Harrod's, and saw "Zegna" on the back wall. The next time I went through Heathrow and wasn't racing for the gate, I detoured to look at the suits and compare the solid swatches. 100% match. ----- Got a cut of silk/linen which had a fine textured pattern woven into it. It's captured my fancy along with the description of "patterned linen popular at the time" on an Egyptian funeral figure wearing a slim dress. Anyone have an idea on the sorts of closures they had, because that dress was literally painted on and it would require some way to be slit and fastened?

Here's an article about ancient Egyptian clothing. The basic woman's dress, the kalasiris, seems to have been a tube of linen, sometimes held up with shoulder straps, and sometimes draped on the body, like a sari. Here's an article about it. There are statuettes from the time showing fabric being pleated, and as the article says, the Egyptians did have starch and may have set the pleats with it, but no one knows. The author of the article above doubts that dresses shown as tightly tailored as the one you describe would have been impossible to produce, but I ask, 'What if you had linen so light and fine as to be transparent (not an issue for those Egyptians), and you had a skilled dressing servant who could dampen that fabric slightly, drape it (maybe even on the bias) right on your body and pleat it to fit?" The fabric would have dried incredibly quickly in that hot climate. Or maybe they had developed some technique like that used to make the famously simple Fortuny pleated column dresses like the Delphos, that clung to every curve. Apparently, to this day, no one knows how Fortuny did it. Anyhow, for the Delphos, no fasteners were needed except maybe a couple at the shoulders. -- Edited on 12/28/12 5:23 PM --
