Date: 12/9/12 7:43 PM I have a flannel nightgown that has flat felled seams down the length. The flannel has ripped alongside the the seam, quite a ways a up the one side. I'm not sure of the best way to repair it. It is a very loose fitting nightie, there is lots of room to work. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Date: 12/9/12 10:40 PM My method for fixing a tear involves an interfacing patch and a close zigzag, as shown here.
If it is a long tear, this won't provide enough stability to prevent further tearing. If you don't mind so much how it looks, for a long tear I fold the fabric so the tear is the center and stitch about 1/4 inch in from the tear. This creates a fold on the inside and a random seam on the outside.
I'm afraid, though, that once flannel starts to shred the end is nigh. I wouldn't put too much time and energy into fixing it because little tears and holes are likely to pop up all over the place soon. ------

Sorry!........I have recycled many a favorite nighty after taking a pattern off of it.

Date: 12/10/12 10:44 AM I'm going to try and repair it, because this is a nightgown from Disneyworld I can't replace. I'm still not sure of the method though. While I know I'm fighting a losing battle, I still have to try. So any suggestions would be appreciated. And I'm talking long rips, 1 to 2 feet long alongside the flat felled side seams. They got they way because they went unnoticed until they got really long, and got washed with the rips many times. It's not mine either, so I would truly like to fix it for the young lady it belongs too. It is very large on her and I do have lots of room to redo it if necessary. There are no other holes on it. The original rips got started when it put on her-she is completely dependent for care is dressed by others. So I think the flannel itself is okay, it's the combination of how it got ripped and then cared for that resulted in the big ripped areas. While I may be fighting a losing battle, I must fight on. So any suggestions, up to and including redoing the entire side/underarm seam, are welcome.

Date: 12/10/12 1:37 PM I know, I'm probably fighting a losing battle, but I'm going to go for it. The seam runs from wrist to hem, I'm going to cut the whole thing out, and resew it. It will be my first time doing a flat felled seam. I'm going to have to redo the cuff too. But since the nightie is too long in the sleeves to, I'm going to shorten them also. I love hitting my head against the wall, so why not? It's been a bad sewing day all around, so I might as well go for broke. Actually it's been a bad enough day to take a break and start the nightie later, I'm too frustrated right this moment to sew for a few hours. I'll post a picture if I get it right.
