Hand sewing

I am really not satisfied with binding done any other way. However in the future I will have to find a way to do by machine. This hand sewing really kills my hands. And I still have so much more to do. Also have never sewed with a thimble maybe it's time to start. I have to say my mitered corners turned out pretty well, better then usual. Date: 12/12/12 9:06 AM I love the Poke_A-Dots dots Check here for them. I got mine at JoAnns or a quilt convention- I'm not really sure which. That's why I gave up stitching binding by hand on quilts I wasn't showing. I use masking or duct tape on my fingers those times I do have to hand sew; thimbles would always fall off, my fingers would get sweaty and they wouldn't stay on. I also used leather thimbles, which kept slipping, and the sticky dots--well, I'm too cheap to buy them. But machine sewing the binding is so much easier! Especially since I've devised a way to teach students and was met with success. Stitch the binding to the front; fold it to the back, to just below the stitching line (that would be your bobbin thread on the back). That said, I never stitched the binding to a quilt! I'm hand piecing my first small quilt. I'm not a quilter by any means but this little bit of experience is making me wonder if it's possible to do the miters by hand on the corners and machine stitch the long lengths of the binding? I can NOT use a thimble, I end up just switching fingers and use the one without the thimble on it, (kind of defeats the purpose of the thimble) But the dots are GREAT, You hardly notice them on your finger. ------ Cathryn

I did try another way bringing the binding to the front and doing a blanket stitch. Wasn't too bad and will probably do this on most bindings. But I wanted this to be as close to perfect as possible as it's a gift. I am using paper clips to hold the binding down and it's working like a charm. ------ quiltingwolf.blogspot.com

And I cannot sew without one! If I have a needle in my hand it feels absolutely weird to me not to have a thimble on the middle finger of my right hand. Even just sewing a stitch or two seems weird.
