Hi, I'm about to join a group of textile embroiderers and will need to be able to do some bobbin work.

In the past I have done it on Berninas and Pfaffs.

My Brother machine (NX400) would be ideal to take to the group as it is light and portable. It also has a knee lift and a needle down function, so at the moment is ticking all the boxes.

I have watched you tube videos and it seems that I need a "bobbin Work Kit". This includes a bobbin case, screwdriver, cover plate and a cd with designs. Cost $79 plus shipping to Oz.

I wonder if I bought an extra bobbin case from Sharp Sewing for $20 would it do the same job?

It would be great to hear from anyone who does creative textile work/bobbin work with their Brother. Also any opinions between drop in style vs Bernina style bobbin cases for the bobbin work.

thanks
Sue

The regular bobbincase has a set tension and it's glued in place. The bobbinwork bobbincase is made so that the tension will hold when it's adjusted and the screw that holds it in place is sturdy enough to be adjusted. For easy identification is gray in color verses the black. Normally I like a front load bobbincase for this type of work but the drop in works well too. On your machine it's pretty simple to take the bobbincase out for fine tunning.

thanks for that. I see what you mean. I didn,t realise that the screw was glued in place. I think I would be better to buy the kit. Wonder if it's possible to buy the grey b case on it's own? I have looked around and I don't think so. )-:

What happens if you need to change the regular bobbin tension then? I suppose that Brother are expecting you to either break the seal if desperate or adjust from the top? interesting!

thanks again
Sue

The bobbin case in the bobbin work kit is not available individually. I wouldn't recomend changing the tension on a regular bobbin case to try and accomplish the same effect as the one in the kit is actually engineered differently. If you take your case out of your machine, there is a little fluffy/furry patch on it...this is not on the bobbinwork case as it was designed to be used both with thread/ribbon the tension slot and also bypassing it for thicker/heavier cord, ribbon, etc. I can attest that the bobbinwork kit is worth the investment if you are interested in textile embellishment.
