My DH has given me my early Christmas gift, which is this beautiful treadle machine that he found all by himself on Craigslist:

It's a Vibrating Shuttle 2 machine, but the crumbling manual doesn't reference any other model number, etc. I've already done a lot of reading at TreadleOn, trying to get my bearings on how to use it once I can get it working. Currently, the hand wheel moves, but the needle bar is frozen in place. Ordered a belt, but of no use obviously until the machine is unfrozen. Looks like I can see the shuttle from the underside, so everything appears to be included, just not working. The decals are in very good condition, and I want to make sure that whatever I do to get the machine going will not affect the decals. Anyone have any tips, additional resources, advice?

Sewing machine oil.
It's going to be your best freind.
NOT 3 in 1 oil, or anything like that.

Oil the machine, everywhere there's a joint or metal moves against metal
Let it sit.
Wiggle the handwheel.

Wait. Repeat until it moves!
It takes patience, but it can be done fairly simply

This one, that one, and a bunch of other ones!
(though the herd is getting more streamlined)

ISMACS is another great information treasure trove -

I'm thinking it's a model 27(?). Is that the puzzle box that I see to the left? She's certainly pretty - I love the colors in the decals! The table top looks to be in good condition too. DH did good.

Heating the metal parts with a hairdryer can aid in loosening the gummed up old oil, which you are trying to soften with the new oil.

Oil, heat, wiggle, repeat.
When ungummed you will want to appropriately flush and wipe excess.

Don't confuse accessibility with ease; just because anybody can pick up a needle and thread doesn't mean sewing quality garments is easy.

Thank you both! Yeah, I was thinking a model 27 too, just hoping to find someone who could confirm if possible. Yes, it is a puzzle box, complete with all attachments!

DH did do good. The best part, is that he bought it in spite of the fact that he gripes about the machines I already have. He called me when he picked it up and said "Wow, it's so cool! It has this box with all these cool tools in it and it has all this patent info stamped on it!" I think he is almost as excited as I am.

That looks so much like the one we had in my house growing up (that the movers threw out when my dad moved much to my mom's horror) but ours wasn't a singer. Does your machine fold into the table? I wish I'd had the internet when I was a kid. I spent so many hours trying to figure out how to fix that machine on my own.

It doesn't fold into the table, just has the coffin top that locks over it. I hear you about machines getting tossed. Apparently my mom had a gorgeous 401 in a cabinet that was my grandmother's. She claims my dad tossed it, he claims my mom tossed it. Either way, GRRRRRR!!!!!

That is a real beauty, a treasure. I may have seen it for sale in Sacramento, if it is this one I am so glad it found a nice home. They are great to use, I have one much like it (a27). For help with use try www.treadleon.net

Thank you! This was purchased down in central southern California, but I used to check the Sac CL daily when I lived there. Lots of good machines on the Sac site, made me wish I'd picked one up before we moved down here. I live in Twentynine Palms now, and the machines are few and far between, and most are at least an hour away. Probably a good thing for my wallet!
