Chicken or Egg: Vogue 1316 Who's copying who, I wonder...

Date: 12/22/12 5:40 AM I saw it too, with Rebecca Taylor tags in it, on ebay, put up there by Last Call - Nieman Marcus. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rebecca-Taylor-Flannel-Mix-Sheath-Dress-Imported-/350644860148 I think Neiman Marcus's buyers would probably be pretty careful and good and about that kind of thing. The Rebecca Taylor listed one, is Polyester/virgin wool/spandex; polyester/rayon, and polyester lining. The other one, which I cannot read the language for, is polyester, rayon, and spandex with no wool at all, if the text is correct there. And comes in another color way too. I think everything gets knocked off, as soon as it's out actually. And since almost everything is made "imported" which often means China, or maybe Vietnam now, you actually maybe could have originals made some place in one fabric, and even the knockoff's later in another fabric, all being sewn in even the same contracted out factory, someplace even just later maybe. If someone made a knock off though, I don't think they had to have that particular Vouge pattern to do that at all, I think they probably could have just traced off the real dress, pretty quick instead. I think the very cheapest dress, which I think might be the knockoff though, actually looks like it fits, and just hangs on that model a bit better than the one in the Vouge patterns picture. Just because on the Vouge model, the dress there, looked a little pouchy and hanging a bit funny or not quite right on the pieced high area above the models stomach. But, either of them really could have a big clothes pin or clip on the back of the dress anyways, just for a photo, you would never really know at all either. -- Edited on 12/22/12 6:10 AM --

I had not seen the original Rebecca Taylor dress and looked for it, but I couldn't track it down. Bonprix doesn't sell designer clothes, so I just found it... er, interesting - that such a distinctive dress was copied right down to the exact same colorway (if not fabric composition). But, as you say, they could have traced off the original dress without using Vogue's pattern (which was only released a couple of months ago). I was taken aback at the initial discovery, but I am sure this happens more than I realized!

Still, it goes to show that not everything that goes down a runway needs to be translated for the home sewer; it is a bit out of left field

All they are concerned about is that the number of units ordered sell at the three price points they assign to an item. They know not all units sell at full price but usually know an average amount. They know the amount of items that sell on sale.....and project again on final mark-down. They are very happy if they get a surprise seller at full price.....not happy when things don't move. They look at spreadsheets....not garments going in shopping bags. I worked for a Women's coat buyer in Dallas one year. It was the warmest winter ever and she was miserable....nothing sold. London Fogs were always good sellers. Knock-offs are normal but more numerous since discounters are now primary outlets.
