Using a 5mm Walking Foot on a 7mm machine?

I just got an Xmas gift - the Brother SA-107 walking foot - but this is the 5mm model. The book that came with my machine, and the Brother website, both say the SA-140 (7mm) walking foot is the correct version for my machine. I've noticed by comparing with pictures online that the 5mm foot definitely puts its feed runners in a different position than the 7mm model, so I'm pretty sure it won't line up with the feed dogs on the machine. Question: is this an issue? Will my sewing project get sucked into a black hole if I use this foot? Should I return it and get the recommended model? If the feet dogs on the machine & the teeth of the walking foot don't line up it defeats the purpose of a walking foot. From your post, it seems that you haven't tried it on the machine. If it were me, I would put the foot on... (with no needle in the machine) and first check to see how lower dogs line up with the walking foot dogs. If, by some chance, they do line up, I'd try going forward with it and see if it seems like it's behaving itself. If by chance, you're good so far (and heck.. weirder things have happened) .... Then... I'd put the needle in, set your machine for a 5mm zig zag stitch width first and hand crank your wheel to make sure it clears the hole properly. Then see if you can possibly do a 7mm... but crank by hand to make sure it clears the foot. Report back. Inquiring minds wanna know how it comes out. :) ------ nightowlsally.com On my radar someday: Babylock Serger, and some machine for travel. However, I have a feeling if there isn't a difference, there would not be two part numbers.

But there also could be other differences between the different walking feet. One might a walking foot with interchangeable sole (open toe or closed toe). Or maybe a fabric guide bar included? I dunno... and I didn't go look them up. I have two different walking feet for me EG.. one has an interchangeable sole and left and right guide bars. I was afraid I couldn't return it (Amazon) if I opened it, so I researched everything I could on the internet instead :) Brother does make a lot of different walking feet. There's a variation they also recommend for my machine that's a open-toe for more visibility, but that's also 7mm. I think I'm going to return it to be on the safe side. For some weird reason, Amazon doesn't carry the recommended model, so I'll have to buy it elsewhere and get credit from Amazon. Thanks for the advice.
