Interfacing/ stabilizer set What should I get?
margaran   Member since 12/25/10 Posts: 51	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 12/27/12 9:35 AM Hi, I'm shopping end of year sales and want to create a set of interfacings, linings and underlinings to cover a broad range of clothing. I will be making everything from knit tops to dress pants. Fabrics I am buying are poplins, twills, batistes and various knits for tops including burnouts. I want to order the stabilizers etc all at once to save on shipping rather than order for each project. I've been poking around https://www.voguefabricsstore.com and they seem to have the widest range. Can you help me select a stash? I plan to get silk organza, petersham & clear elastic. I also need woven & knit interfacing & linings but don't know what to order. There are so many different weights. Do I just need to buy a yard of each?? I need pocket material. I'd read a discussion regarding material for pockets but now I can't find it. What are your suggestions for weights and quantities? Should I get both iron on and sew in in all weights? Knit lining for sheer burnout tops: suggestions? Knit stabilizers? Weights? Quantity? Woven stabilizers for sheer blouses to lightweight twill pants Weights? Quantity? What did I not ask that I need to know? Many thanks, Maggie

Date: 12/27/12 11:01 AM Go to Fashion Sewing Supply and click on the Contact Us tab. Tell Pam what kinds of things you'll be sewing and she'll be happy to answer your questions. She also posts here on PR pretty often. I believe the only thing she can't supply you with is Petersham. ------ Debbie

I got fusi-knit for my knits, a see in woven and fusible woven for my cottons, etc. For collars and cuffs I ordered a yard, for others I ordered 2 yds. For notions, elastics, etc I ordered a package or 2-3 yds. I was very pleased and would order again. It is nice to have a 4-6 mo supply on hand. I got the petersham samples from another company- will have to look it up but it wasn't the ribbon. ------ re-living my youth through sewing...

I can't mention specific products because of the rules here, but there are a few things to keep in mind when buying interfacing. --Many stores have Happy New Year Sales at the beginning of the year. -- Buying wide-width interfacing (from any vendor) will ALWAYS save you money...over buying the skimpy 20-22" wide stuff. -- Most experienced sewists skip the "papery/spun poly" stuff, in favor of Professional Grade "fabric-based" interfacing. Louise Cutting wrote a good article about Professional Grade Designer Interfacing in the latest issue of threads, and I was pleased to see that she mentioned my store as a source. And Debbie is right...I am more than happy to answer questions privately, and give "Interfacing Consultations" through the -Contact Us- link on our site. Date: 12/28/12 8:07 AM Pam at FSS solved my contour waistband problems with her quick answer to a question. The waistbands now look luxurious and professional. When I'm tackling a new project, I read through her blog and look at her finished projects to find out which interfacing she uses on various fabrics. I also keep hymo and hair canvas on hand. I think you get what you pay for with interfacings IMO...don't buy the cheapo stuff.

I was so happy to buy first rate rather than have something turn out to be a wadder because I didn't have quality supplies. Her buttons are lovely also. Pam is having a sale on most of her interfacings. I looked for a more general place to post this but couldn't figure out where it might go. This is such a limited thread, perhaps one of the mods could put this info in the right place?
