Date: 12/27/12 3:12 PM I received some money for Christmas and it is apparently already burning a hole in my pocket because I want to order some fabric. I have been wanting to make some knit tops in order to have some more casual clothes. In the past I have sewn with mostly wovens, so I am not very familiar with the various types of knits.
Over the summer I bought a shirt made out of modal, but it appears to be a woven. I had never heard of this fabric before but the shirt I bought felt so soft and luxurious.
So, I found some modal on ebay from the seller "highendfabrics". It seems reasonably priced and they have a variety of colors. Has anyone used this type of fabric before? If so, was it easy to sew? Mu main concern is picking and pilling that seems to occur so easy with many knits today. Also, has anyone ordered from that ebay seller by a chance.
Here is the link to the fabric.
ETA: Is modal a stable knit? I am so confused by what stable knit means. Thanks so much for all your help! -- Edited on 12/27/12 3:17 PM -- ------ http://talesofawannabeseamstress.blogspot.com/ |

Date: 12/27/12 3:22 PM I have ordered a lot from this seller, he is fantastic.
Well, modal really varies. I have found, overall, that it is has more stretch and less recovery than other knits, so I tend to need to sew a smaller size. However, the modal you are looking at has spandex, so there may be more recovery there.
As to pilling, I can't say, I haven't worn or washed it enough yet.

Date: 12/30/12 5:27 PM Growing up in Europe, I was familiar with cotton modal for higher-quality underwear (panties and camisoles) and tee-shirts. It's a wonderful blend that doesn't pill, holds its shape and feels soft and luxurious on the skin.
Earlier this year, I found a supplier in Souther California that sells this type of fabric. I have to check my CC for his address. I made panties out of it and love, love, love it.
