Date: 12/28/12 1:00 AM Hi, I'm about a size 16 and only 5'3" at a pinch! I love this Marcy dress and would make it from very fine polished cotton. I'm wondering what the general opinion is? Do you think I would need to be a bit taller? ------ Brother QC1000, Brother PQ1500, Bernina Virtuosa 160, Pfaff (old), Babylock BLCS, Bernette 1100D, Bernette 334DS |

Date: 12/28/12 2:24 AM There are quite a few reviews and some pictures on google images. Most people seem to have found it a good pattern. My guess is that it will be a style that's very dependent on having a fabric which is drapey enough to be fluid, and not sort of bell out like a ship in full sail. Another pointer might be figure shape. Others may disagree, but on me, things which hang loose from the bust add inches, because I'm an inverse pear, and things which pull in at the waist with a belt only bunch a lot either side because I'm fairly short waisted. I love the style, but know it wouldn't work for my figure type. I suspect figure type rather than height might be a clue as to how it would look. Any chance of trying on a similar rtw garment first? ------ so many patterns, clamouring to be sewn

Date: 12/28/12 3:37 AM I'd second petro's thoughts, particularly re: the fabric: IMHO, the pattern calls for a very drapey fabric to look good. Have you considered making a muslin? I think it would be really helpful to test-drive the pattern before cutting into nice fabric.
Just my 2 cents. ------ Happy Sewing! |

Date: 12/28/12 6:34 AM Yes, I think you are both right in 1. drapey fabric and 2. Muslin.
I have trawled through thr reviews and still can't make a decision to either buy the pattern or not. I notice a lot of the ladies made a fairly small size which makes me wonder? I would love to see it on a bigger girl.
I am a rectangle. If I can get a good deal on the pattern I think I'll try it!
thanks

Date: 12/28/12 7:56 AM As a fellow rectangle, I would not make that dress. With no waist definition it would not be flattering. It does, however look like a comfy around-the-house garment. ------ Barb

I think if you have a smallish ribcage the empire style would look good and take the place of waist shaping. I am assuming though that you make it quite fitted through this area. -- Edited on 12/28/12 9:22 AM -- ------ Taking in is happier than letting out.

Date: 12/28/12 10:56 AM To the OP: I'm taller than you, similar size, and I have almost no waist, and I wouldn't bother to make this because it would just hang on me and look like a robe. One clue to the lack of shaping is the fashion photo on the pattern envelope has the model wearing a big belt at her waist, even though the style has a raised waist. |

Date: 12/29/12 10:14 AM I have made this dress in a very nice knit and wore it once around the house. I don't even wear it around the house anymore. I'm 5'4" with a 36" bust. I made the small and there is just too much fabric hanging, I felt like I was wearing a 1950's housedress. I'm going to cut it up and use the fabric as binding. |

I knew I was dreaming thinking of making this up. So glad I have asked for opinions it confirms my "gut" instinct!
