Date: 12/28/12 11:58 AM I noticed the subject of "what should I use for machine power protection" came up in a couple of threads. I thought I'd start this topic so we can focus the discussion in one place and not miss anything.
And... I'm shopping for something for my new Janome 7700, so I have an vested interest 
I'm currently considering the CyberPower CP685AVRG or the Monster HT 800G
Both are in stock at stores local to me. The Monster has higher clamping joules for a spike, but the CyberPower also provides UPS (uninterruptable power supply) capability so a little bit of time to finish/shut down the machine.
Thoughts? Other recommended brands/models? We do have an APC UPS for our primary computer (and I don't recall the brand on our home theater; probably Monster).

Date: 12/28/12 1:08 PM I have no contribution to make, but will be watching with interest as I now have a computerized sewing machine which cost the value of our entertainment system and all computing equipment combined...
For those of us who don't really believe in electrons, and who usually tune out when the conversation turns to Joules and Amps. any education y'all can provide on what I should be looking for would be helpful...
One of my considerations is that Berninas are also reputedly sensitive to low voltage, and we get the occasional brownout, so I don't know if that changes the parameters...? ------

APC UPS
I tested by hooking up the machine and unplugging the UPS after it was charged. It kept the machine on without a flicker. We have a generator on the the house so it only needs to go 30 seconds if there's an outage. This does protect the machine from any blips in the power though. ------

Date: 12/28/12 3:48 PM I'd go with the CyberPower UPS. It protects against both surges and low voltage. Either can damage electronic equipment. ------

Date: 12/28/12 4:22 PM I have one similar to yours, the UPS NS 600. I bought it at Sam's Club. Do you keep yours turned on all the time? I turn mine on when I plug in my machine to use it.

Date: 12/28/12 5:06 PM I also have a similar model for my embroidery machines. Power fluctuations can occur even from other appliances plugged in. I live in an apartment and when I turn my iron on the lights dim ever so slightly. Recently, we had a heavy rain storm with high winds. The lights flickered on/off for just a few seconds. My embroidery project was saved with the battery backup. I learned later that a transformer blew a couple blocks from my house. ------

1 member likes this. I bought a power back up unit years ago but soon learned it wasn't for me. It sends out a high squeal when no power. Sure it keeps things running but do you realty want to wake up at 3am and find that UPS and turn off the alarm?
It alarms everytime you unplug it as well as during a power interruption.
I moved from a state with an interruption ever year or two to another state with interruptions monthly. The squeals drive me batty- like a fire/smoke detector. Now if they make a brand that won't alarm, I would get one.
As for serge proctors, you want higher joules and a light that tells you when it no longer works. Most have a life cycle of only a few years and when the light flashes it needs replacing. ------
