Subject: ISO swimwear fabric Date: 12/30/12 4:25 PM

I am about to make this Jalie pattern for my daughter's swim team suit.

http://www.jalie.com/jalie3134-womens-racerback-swimsuite-sewing-pattern.html

the pattern calls for fabrics with a 70 percent stretch across lenght and width. I can find some great stuff online, but they are 40 across the grain and 20 percent vertical. I don't have that much experience sewing swimwear, although I've filled with many thin and or slippery knits. Can anyone point me to a fabric shop online that has good 70% stretch swimwear fabric I could use, or tell me if a 40 / 20 would work using a slightly different technique or slightly larger size?

I am also supposed to use a 3/8 inch elastic. Anything I should avoid?

Thank you for any advice you may have.

What area of WA are you in?
No matter what fabric you use, consider your first suit a test. to make sure the torso is long enough and fine tune the leg holes.
YOu can use fabric that has less stretch, by going up a size.
I have found not everyone knows how to find the stretch correctly so double check if you buy it by mail.
I prefer 3/8 inch knit elastic that's chlorine resistant. I prefer the knit over the cotton, because there is no shrinkage and not matter how hard you stretch it it doesn't narrow as you sew it.
When I make my first sample, I make the seam allowances a little wider and use my sewing machine with a basic zigzag instead of the serger in case I have to adjust.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

Probably the closest place with a large selection would be Seattle Fabric.

Thanks for these links to swimwear fabrics. My daughter is on the swim team this spring. I want to make her some swimsuits, but it's been awhile. She's a 34DDD. Is it even possible to find cups of that size for swimwear? (I checked a few sites and didn't see anything larger than a C.)

I never found a swimsuit that has a cup that covers my entire breast. They have a supportive elastic band and the semi cup thing supports partially underneath and up to the apex. The breast tissue above and to the sides are supported by the spandex.
If you are not in an area where you can find a swimsuit in the store to look at, let me know and I can take some photos of the inside bust area.

I am plussized with an E-cupsize. I used find bra-cups in the webshop of Elingeria Germany. They were imported from bramakerssupply (Canadian website)
They had not the exactly the good ratio between circumference and depth so i cloned them in padding. I have pictures of that in https://picasaweb.google.com/101033573713690312191/BHHemdjes?authkey=Gv1sRgCPaZj_H2nPvVQA.
Be assured that the lycra that you buy is fit for swimmingpools for otherwise the chlorine will soon deteriorate it (Fading and deteriorating the elasticity)
