On the bolt of the fleese from WalMart it says do not use fabric softener. Why is that? We use fabric softener all the time. Am I going to have to wash these by themselves?

The fabric softener affects the breathability and wicking properties.
It shouldn't be used on any activewear.
If your're making a blanket/throw it probably won't be a problem.
Fabric softener is very flammable, I quit using it when my kids were young, now I use sparingly.

Hi Linda,

On fleece like Polartec-brand, the chemicals in fabric softener negatively affect the performance of the high-tech fabric, making them not as functional for skiing, winter hiking, etc. Usually, it is suggested to wash the fleece/garments using powdered detergent instead of liquid detergent and to hang dry.

However, if the garments are just for regular, everyday casual wear, I wouldn't worry about it.

Malden recommends using powdered detergent and no fabric softener. I don't use the powdered detergent because I have hard water and a septic system. I just use less of the liquid so that it rinses out well.

We too have very hard water, so I gave up on powdered detergent many years ago. I've even been known to use some fabric softener with fleece, because our static can be so bad. I don't use it for performance items, but we use a lot of Polartec blankets and throws, so they get softener in some loads.
(I actually contacted Malden at some point to get info on the powdered det. suggestion. Since it is not a safety issue, like some flame-retardant fabrics were, I go with what works for us.)

Thank you everyone. I think since these garments are for fashion only I will just let it be washed like the rest. Hubby has been helping me with laundry and I did not want to make him have to take another step. I have been ill for years and he took this chore over and does a great job. I wouldn't dream of taking it back---leaves me more time to get back into sewing and to machine embroidery!

Linda, I know how you feel. My DH took over laundry and when I had my only cashmere sweater being worn by the teddy bear, I just grinned and beared it. Sometimes it just don't pay to be too particular!
