Knitting mittens for the first time

I'm going to be commuting on the metro for a few weeks and wanted a small project. I can't read because I'll get motion sick but oddly, I seem to be able to knit. I'm even using my handspun. This is making sizing a bit random. I'm less than an inch into the ribbing and I'm afraid they might be a bit big. I'll keep plugging away for a while though before I decide. I'm using Elizabeth Zimmerman's 36 stitch mitten pattern. Wish me luck! Motion sickness got really bad when riding in the car this summer & fall. I got them online at Vitamin Shoppe. I just started using these sheep dpn holders they were great & really hold too when you have items in a bag & it is bumped around....by Clover Double Pointed Protectors they are called. I like them. ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic! After a few more rounds, if they still seem big, can you go down a size in needles? Mittens are a great project - they go quickly and are easy to knit. I spun this yarn from a Phat Fiber sampler box. It's on Ravelry if you want to learn more. Basically, each month you try to get a box (they sell out in approximately 15 seconds) and the box has a bunch of different fiber samples. I spun this during the Tour de Fleece in 2011. It's quite uneven but I love it anyway because I made it. Really, I am very easily amused. My mittens are homely but snuggy and warm. The mittens themselves were knit in the round by magic loop. I prefer using 9" needles for small in the round projects but didn't have any in the right diameter. I think I'd like a tighter cuff next time but these do work. I wore them y'day on a nippy morning. Funnily enough, the left one is much warmer than the right on the back of the hand. You can tighten up the cuffs this way: on the wrong side, weave elastic thread through the knit stitches of the rib. They won't show on the right side. I had an art director who used to do this on all her long sleeve sweater cuffs: they always looked so trim and right! j.

They don't look too big-you could easily start with a few less stitches to tighten it up around your wrist. Now I have to go look on Ravelry.
