I tried to explain my pain to the "normals" (i.e., non-sewers) in my life but all I received for my troubles were odd stares. OK, odder than usual

I ordered some fabric right before Christmas from Fabric.com and it was cut and shipped within 24 hours and made it's way to NJ the next afternoon (talk about your Christmas miracles!). Anywhose the package has been sitting at my local UPS depot since late Wednesday/early Thursday morning with a scheduled delivery of Jan 2.

At times like these I really hate not having a car or else I'd drive over there and see if they'd give it to me.

Oh UPS - let my fabric go!

Not like I don't have plenty of other UFOs to keep me occupied this weekend but it's fabric - all alone at the holidays on some seedy dock somewhere in the cold. I hope it doesn't fall in with a bad crowd - you know some crates of 20 spools of thread for a $1 or something....

Thanks for listening.

Was a time when Queens NY was a gentler place and the UPS guy had the keys to all the apartment houses front lobby doors. And they'd leave the package, or find a neighbor to sign for it.

Now, if you don't get that package on the first delivery, steel yourself. When I see "Brown" on the street, I hurry to the back of the truck and sign for everyone in my building. When I order something, I put out a note to remind him that all he has to do is go to the alleyway to leave it with Stanley, the custodian. I drew an arrow. ====>

All this to save me from a trip to...Maspeth.

Maspeth is exactly like a deserted Western town. Mostly vast truck depot parking lots, acres of them, dotted here and there with a single standing ramshackle home. The streets are unmarked, unpaved. There are no stores. There are NO STORES. Bus service is rare. It will take hours to get out there and you must pray to get back out. And that's where the Queens UPS station is.

I went there once. The sun set, and the return bus never came. I walked back up the hill to beg one of the delivery men to drop me off during a truck run. Drop me off anywhere past the edges of the frontier.

I tell you, I hate that little scrap of paper stuck to the apartment house door. And I can spot it all the way down the block.

Someone did that for me, and I could never get UPS to tell me who it was. Never saw my package either.

It's a bit better here. Apparently they operate differently in different neighborhoods.

Yes, and it's bad behavior like that that screwed it up for the rest of us.

A plague of warts and hives on the person who took your package!

I feel your pain. They're holding a pair of shoes I ordered captive too. However, UPS doesn't deliver on New Years Eve or New Years Day so that may be part of the hold up. :]

Ack. I sent something to my son via Purolator Canada last week (no relation to the allegedly dysfunctional company of the same name in the U.S.). They turn it over to UPS at the border -- UPS made a first attempt yesterday, and the note with it said that if they couldn't deliver it, they would RETURN it. He's staying home today to wait for it, just to be sure. I called UPS and they said they would hold it for five days and he could call them to make arrangements, but still -- return it?

I just rechecked FedEx and it turns out sending it via FedEX (ground rate) would have been just as fast and even a few dollars cheaper, AND they apparently don't return parcels that are hard to deliver -- they hold it for you. I just became a FedEx girl.

There's more to this story, too (related to company incompetence), but it relates to the shipper I sent it with -- they didn't have me fill out all the required forms, and it almost got stuck at the border. Long, stupid story, but anyway -- I guess it will be delivered today. I hope.

P.S. That "hold for five days" thing apparently isn't true in the U.S. He tells me the card says it will be returned automatically if it can't be delivered by the third attempt. Insane.......

Just check that Fedex isn't doing the equivilent of their "Smart Post" there...I've only ordered from one vendor that uses it, but I now understand the complaints!!
My package arrived in my town on a Sunday nite.. late Tuesday, they turned it over to USPs for Wednesday delivery..no delivery on Wednesday...and they wiped off the online tracking!!! I got my package on Thursday! I've had no problems with items sent USPS, but Fedex apparently is holding stuff to make the scheduled delivery date, even if the item arrives early..and then delivering it too late to get sorted.
