2 members like this. Date: 12/31/12 1:47 PM I never sew with knits. I got some knit fabric from my sister for Christmas and I'm really excited about making myself a Turtleneck.
But let me say this:
I'm NOT putting seam binding in the shoulders to keep them from stretching. I'm using a straight stitch on the machine, so why shouldn't that be enough to hold the shoulders.
I'm not doing it, I say!
Um. What are YOU not doing?

I trace my pattern pieces.
If the grain line/arrow of the pattern piece is parallel to a fold line or other straight line in the garment: I'M NOT DRAWING IT IN.
I'M NOT!

Date: 12/31/12 4:27 PM I've wondered about this, too. After all, it does look funny sometimes to have a homesewn garment of stretchy material not stretching at all or at least compatibly at the shoulders!
It's a different thing when you've got a loose, floppy knit that really would get very looooong in the shoulder (like down to your elbows) if it were completely unsupported. But I still think even this type should have a little 'give.' |

2 members like this. Subject: No, Im not doing it! Im NOT. Date: 12/31/12 6:05 PM It depends on the knit. If it is a really stretchy knit like a rib knit or something that grows as the day wears on like a slinky knit, then I use a clear elastic in the shoulder seam. Usually I just cut the hanger straps off another garment and use that.
I never, ever trace out big 4 patterns. I just go ahead and cut them out. -- Edited on 12/31/12 6:06 PM -- ------ Marilyn

Subject: No, Im not doing it! Im NOT. Date: 12/31/12 6:25 PM I agree that whether or not you need to stablize the shoulders depends on the knit. Knits with good recovery do not need to be stabilized -- I simply use the straight stitch. By the way, you can use clear elastic to stablize knits.
