I recently bought a sewing machine for my daughter. One of the included accessories was a cut 'n' sew foot. It trims the fabric while making an overcast stitch and I'm guessing it is meant to replace a serger. I'm a gadget nut and could be tempted to buy this attachment for my machine. Has anyone used this type of attachment? Is it practical?

I own a serger; love it and use it all the time. I'm wondering if there are times when this attachment would be preferable to a serger.

I have a friend who swears by it...
but, I've never been able to get mine to work properly.
I know it's most certainly user error...
in fact...I think I will try again!

This one, that one, and a bunch of other ones!
(though the herd is getting more streamlined)

I have used such an accessory for, by and on a Bernina.

It not only does not take the place of even the basic serger, it makes a bloody mess that drops into the feed dogs and bobbin case.

Not a fan of the Cut n Sew attachment. A serger is so much faster and neater.

Do they even make these anymore? For the price of this attachment (which I actually bought in 1987), you could get a Brother 1034D.

I have one also, but it has been gathering dust for decades, since it really doesn't even come close to the efficiency and good effect you get with a serger.

I have one that came with my BL Ellisimo- may be called something else but it cuts and overcasts. But I own a serger so it has never left the box- not even to test it out. I can't think of any situation that I would change to that foot instead of using my serger.

Probably the Sidecutter Foot. Kind of ironic that Babylock would sell such a thing

I have one that I use for small jobs when I'm too lazy to re-thread serger. It's not as good or as fast as a serger but is nice to use instead of a serger when you don't have one. HTH

Yikes! One of those came with my Brother. It's a head scratcher...The blade is more an Exacto knife and seems messy. I'm already abusive to my machines without filling it with fluff.

The 1034D serger is the same price as a non-warranty machine repair. Ask me how I know.....

I have the Bernina one. I used it a lot to overcast seam allowances on cotton. That was before I got a serger and haven't used it in years. it was useful.
