On a local online classified I found a Bernina Record 830 with what looks like everything that came with it originally for $50. I didn't try it out much, but it sews and is quiet. I'm about to go set it up, open the case and go through the manual. Anything special I should be looking for or checking?

The start of a beautiful friendship. Get the knee lifter in and get comfy. Lucky you. I sewed on one for almost 40 years.

Lucky you! They usually sell for much more. At that price, if you are concerned about it, you could take it in to a Bernina dealer and have them do a tune-up.

Or, you could do it yourself. I have a Bernina 830 record, it is pretty easy to clean and oil.

What a great find ! At that price, *if* you don't love it, you can clean it up and resell at a profit.

Before you sew on it make sure you clean it up and oil the machine. This one does require oiling, it does not have impregnated oil in the metal like the 930 and newer machines have. Also make sure the area that is to be greased in still soft and pliable.
Oiling areas on the 830
The picture is from an old fax so you will have to work with it the best you can. For example on the needle take up mechanism there is 6 oiling spots, study it well with the machine to figure it out.
Enjoy!!! you scored BIG!!!
Here is a picture of 930 , very similar. A good rule of thumb on the 830 is all moving parts and grease where it was greased before. the bobbin race requires oiling every "?" many hours of sewing.

That is an amazing find. If you want to be on the safe side, may I suggest... since you bought it for $50.00 take it in for a cleaning and proper oiling. Once you know that is done you can maintain it yourself very easily.

I sew on my mom's 830 record almost every day. Every time I think about buying a new machine to get some new feature, I just can't justify the expense because the old 830 does almost everything I need really well.

My machine was serviced yearly before I got it 15 years ago. As long as I clean out the lint with a brush and oil it, it sews very quietly. I don't even take it in for annual maintenance anymore, mostly because of the pushy Bernina staff.

I have found through the years is that it sews better on wovens with microtex, quilting, or sharp needles, not the universal ones. Also, I had to put in some practice time on the buttonholes, because my old Kenmore machine had the templates. Once I learned my own best way of marking the buttonhole on a strip of stabilizer, I could make beautiful buttonholes.

I love the knee lift and find certain presser feet indispensable especially the #10 edgestitching foot and the walking foot.

Enjoy your machine.
