Sewing Machine Test Drive Kit getting kinda excited about this...

But while I've been working on projects, I have been making little notes about some of the challenges or quirky solutions I've come up with to be able to work with the weird stuff I like to do. So I've got a little pile started of fabrics and 3x5 inch cards that describe my results, wish list, and/or challenges I have had when working with certain fabrics. I also keep a little piece with each example that shows the stitching of my current machines. So today, I think I'm going to go back to buy another one of these bags to organize and keep this stuff put aside in one nice, organized, ready-for-road-trip bag. A few of the items I have put aside (and I know this is probably a weird list compared to what some of you sew!) ... 1. Some cotton clothesline & 1" strips of quilting cotton that I use to make those fabric bowls. Great example for playing with Dual Feed Gizmos (DFGs) on machines. I love making those bowls on my Horizon. 2. A chunk of batik that I embellished ala Stupendous Stitching Craftsy Class and then made into an Acorn Bag ( shown on my blog ) . I worked on this piece at a sew-in last month, choosing to take the day to play with my Ellisimo Gold. I had a less-than-fun-time using the walking foot on the EG compared to the DFG on my Horizon. So this particular piece will be interesting to see if it works well with an IDT type DFG .... and if there is a true difference between a walking foot on the Bernina compared to the machines I own. 3. 3 or 4 chunks of quilting sandwiches made of different battings, etc for FMQ'ing. And of course... 4. I will have one pouch reserved for the Infamous 1/4 Inch Seam Saga challenges. I have a list of what to bring... including that Seam Guide Ruler that I just love to see if I have to tweak the machine to get that scant 1/4 inch seam. More to come.. but so far... these are going to be fun to try out on new machines. I also have been making a list of what else I need to make sure to bring - certain size needles, specialty threads (especially for the FMQ and topstitching). Oh... and FWIW, my son and I were going through the new paper catalog on New Years Day, and that bag is not in there! Bummer! So it might be being discontinued to make room for the other bags that are now offered. I still like the way the double bag in the link is laid out best. I'm going today, but will just have my normal bag o stuff, though I do plan to do some quarter inch seaming and see how it goes. I know the 9mm might yank the seam to the left, but I figured out how to do it on my 730 where it doesn't do that, and now I'm pleased. I can't wait to try the Bernina dual feed today! I just did a project (shown on my blog) that I used the hand-look quilting stitch on. Here's a close-up of that stitch: My Horizon and the EllieG both have it. I'll bet there's some of you that have this stitch on your machine but you don't know it's there. :) Basically, the decorative thread (that you want to show on the right side) is put in the bobbin. A monofiliament is used for the top thread. The top thread literally pulls the bobbin thread to the top on each side to create the illusion of spaced hand stitches. It took quite a bit of trying different tensions and fabric stabilizers to get a decent looking stitch like this out of the Ellisimo for this particular item. So I added some of the scraps, along with some that I put different layers of stabilizer, into the test drive kit along with the left overs of the metallic thread on a bobbin. Can't wait to see if any other machines do a better job of that stitch. I went looking around in her etsy store and found this: Applique Frame And here's a pic of it (in case it goes extinct off of etsy) .... So I was naughty last night... Ran to Bass Pro after an afternoon at the gun range. I bought two of the bags... One for my "knitting mothership" (to hold all of my circs, dpns, and extra notions like cable needles, tape measures, stitch markers, stitch holders, etc.... Basically all of my knitting stuff that is currently not being used in a project bag. One piece of good news... The double bag comes with 20 of the pouches. (I thought it was only going to be 10 the way I understood the description online.) The other one ... I'm setting that up to be my Road Trip Sewing Machine Test Bag. I've been making 3x5 cards that describe sewing situations and/or challenges along with fabric samples & a list of threads, needle sizes, etc needed to execute the test.
