I've been considering joing the ASG, but the Philadelphia chapter doesn't seem to actually be IN Philadelphia. So I wondered if there was anything else out there? Or anyone? Maybe we could start our own bigger badder group right here in, you know, Philly.

Don't know of anything existing but I'd be interested!

I am not aware of any group that meets in Philadelphia but a number of us have met informally here as well as PR trips.
Years ago there was a group whose full name I have forgotten but had "sewing collective" in the title. They met at the Old Pine Community Center and even offered classes. I haven t heard anything about this group in a long time however If you would like to establish a group. I would suggest selecting a few dates and a place such as Fourth Street and go from there.
Good luck.

There are a few lonely looking store fronts on 4th street just begging for a lovely remodel aren't there? Wouldn't it be great if there was some kind of sewing space there?

I thought it would be nice to have a regular group, but a PR meetup would be fun too. How do those get started?

I think you could probably just declare a place and time. :)

Spool at 19th and South has a sewing space, I wonder if they'd be interested in hosting something?

I know there are two active ASG chapters in that area.... One in Philadelphia and another group in Bucks County. When I lived there, most of the neighborhood groups were west (west Chester maybe?) and north suburbs. They were always hoping a central group would start .... So maybe you can get an ASG Neighborhood group started....it would be a part of the larger Chapter.

You can also meet people in some of the weekend sewing classes at Philadelphia University....Laurel Hoffman is an excellent teacher if she is still running her continuing Ed program.

I am glad you mentioned Spool. They have classes there and a great space for meeting. If I wanted to get a sewing group going, I would definitely contact them. The challenge, however, of getting a group together is deciding upon a date on which the majority of those interested can attend. Also, ASG requires dues which may or not affect membership.

I check regularly for NY shopping trips but have not seen one for a long time. The advantage of shopping with a PR group is that the leader promises store owner a sizable group and often gets a discount but at the very least gets one store , Metro, normally closed on Saturday, to open.

I'm in the burbs and have not found anything nearby. Stitchers Dream in Glenside used to host an ASG chapter but it appears to be defunct. It seems as if the interest in garment sewing is low in this area, even though there are a few quilt shops offering classes and sew-ins.

I'll be watching this thread. I'd love to be involved with a sewing group in the Phila. area.

yes, I thought of Spool, but I'm not sure what their deal is these days. For ony thing, I don't think they're selling fabric anymore. Even if they are, it's only a limited range of quilting cottons. So I don't see what hosting a meeting would do for them, short of just renting out the space. They don't offer open sewing in the evenings when they keep the space for classes.

The ASG "Philadelphia" chapter is actually the southeast PA chapter and they don't have any neighborhood groups anywhere near the actual city of Philadelphia. (Why they don't just call it the Southeast PA chapter, I haven't a clue.) I did email with the chapter leader and she suggested starting a neighborhood group. For a few personal reasons, I've begun dialing back my commitments to my kids' schools, so it would kind of defeat the purpose for me to dive into something else right.

maybe just a one time meet up? How do those PR meet-ups get started, anyway?

Wino, why do you think interest in apparel sewing is particularly low here? Compared to other places?
